A shocking incident has unfolded in New York City, as a police officer and her boyfriend have been apprehended for allegedly distributing hard drugs while she was on duty.
The United States Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York has announced the arrest of former officer Grace Rosa Baez, 37, and her partner Cesar Martinez, 43. They are facing charges of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and heroin, as well as narcotics distribution.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams expressed his outrage, stating that Baez had sworn to protect and serve the people of New York but instead chose to engage in illegal activities.
“Grace Rosa Baez took an oath to protect and serve the people of New York City. As alleged, she flagrantly violated that oath by pushing poison, including fentanyl and heroin, which are driving the nation’s deadly opioid crisis and have been responsible for thousands of tragic deaths in this city and around the nation,” Williams said. “My Office and our law enforcement partners will continue to aggressively pursue those peddling these deadly poisons – no matter who they are.”
Baez had been serving as a police officer in the New York City Police Department since 2012 until her arrest. The NYPD initiated an investigation into her conduct in 2020, leading to her being placed on modified duty.
From October 9th to October 18th, Baez and Martinez allegedly communicated with a confidential source, who was actually working with law enforcement, regarding wholesale narcotics trafficking. They promised to sell kilogram quantities of fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine to the source.
During these negotiations, Baez assured the source that the fentanyl was of the highest quality and arranged a meeting on October 16th to provide a sample of the drugs for sale. Authorities later confirmed that the plastic candy container she handed over contained fentanyl.
Following Baez’s arrest, a search of her and Martinez’s apartment led to the discovery of a package of suspected narcotics being thrown outside. Inside the apartment, law enforcement found a kilogram press machine and additional suspected narcotics that Martinez had attempted to discard.
