Oakland NAACP demands ‘State of Emergency’ due to crime.
The Oakland NAACP Calls for State of Emergency to Address Rising Crime
The Oakland NAACP released a statement on Thursday, urging state and local elected leaders to declare a “state of emergency” in response to the alarming increase in violent crime within the city of California.
The statement, authored by Cynthia Adams, President of the Oakland NAACP, and Bishop Bob Jackson of Acts Full Gospel Church, strongly criticized lenient local officials and left-wing activism for contributing to the surge in criminal activities.
“Failed leadership, including the movement to defund the police, our District Attorney’s unwillingness to charge and prosecute people who murder and commit life-threatening serious crimes, and the proliferation of anti-police rhetoric have created a heyday for Oakland criminals,” Adams and Jackson wrote.
Adams and Jackson further emphasized the disproportionate impact of crime on African Americans and condemned misguided attempts to combat racism by refusing to prosecute violent offenders.
“There is nothing compassionate or progressive about allowing criminal behavior to fester and rob Oakland residents of their basic rights to public safety. It is not racist or unkind to want to be safe from crime,” the statement read.
Addressing the urgency of the situation, Adams and Jackson called upon city and state officials to allocate additional resources, including an increase in police officers, to effectively address the problem:
“We are in crisis, and elected leaders must declare a state of emergency and bring resources together from the city, the county, and the state to end the crisis.”
This statement comes at a time when the Bay Area is experiencing a significant spike in crime. In neighboring San Francisco, Mayor London Breed was forced to flee a speech on combating violent crime after someone threw a brick into the crowd.
Notably, several big-name brands like Nordstrom and Saks OFF 5th, along with various hotel chains, have already relocated from the area due to concerns about public safety.
