Oath Keepers leader receives longest sentence for January 6.
Oath Keepers Founder Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Capitol Riot
The founder of Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Rhodes, who was convicted of seditious conspiracy and other charges, received the longest prison sentence to date for the Capitol riot.
During the trial, prosecutor Kathryn Rakoczy argued for a longer sentence, stating that Rhodes and other members of the Oath Keepers were involved in “terrorism” and posed a threat to democracy. However, Rhodes maintained that he and his fellow defendants were “grossly overcharged” and that no member of the Oath Keepers took part in the actual violence at the Capitol.
Despite Rhodes’ claims, District Judge Amit Mehta stated that Rhodes posed an ongoing threat to democracy and the fabric of the country. Mehta’s decision was based on the historic nature of attempting to stop the certification of an election for the first time in American history.
Over 1,000 Arrests Made in Connection to January 6
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, over 1,000 arrests have been made in connection to the January 6 riot at the Capitol. Of those arrested, 570 defendants have pleaded guilty, including four to a federal charge of seditious conspiracy.
Former President Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election in 2024, recently stated that he would likely pardon a large portion of the January 6 defendants if given a second term. However, he also stated that it is impossible to get a fair trial in Washington, D.C.
