Obama Birthday Bash Will Serve Meatless Menu
Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party, which the former president recently scaled back in the face of criticism, will have a vegan menu, Bloomberg reported Thursday.
Guests on Obama’s $12 million Martha’s Vineyard estate will get to eat “Spam musubi” made from fake beef and “cheesesteak eggrolls” made without cheese, steak, or egg, according to a leaked menu.
Obama originally planned to host hundreds of guests, including Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney, at the birthday party this weekend. He scaled back the exclusive event after he faced withering criticism for hosting it as the Delta variant of COVID-19 sweeps the nation.
Obama’s fleshless feast will serve as an endorsement for Impossible Foods, Eat Just, and Perfect Day, the false-meat companies that will cater the food, which was overseen by the musician Questlove.
It is unclear if the former president will offer another menu that includes meat products.
Plant-based foods that mimic meat have become increasingly popular—and embraced by Democratic politicians—in recent years. In March, Colorado governor Jared Polis (D.) created a statewide holiday to promote veganism, a move that garnered high praise from the radical animal rights group PETA.
