Ocasio-Cortez Criticized for Complaining About Generous Tipper

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: From Bartender to Congresswoman

Before winning a seat in Congress, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) worked as a bartender, giving her firsthand experience in the service industry. With her love for social media, it’s no surprise that she couldn’t resist responding to a question on the new platform Threads.

“What are your best and worst food service industry stories? @AOC,” someone with the Threads handle taylorjordalardas wrote.

AOC didn’t hold back in her response, sharing stories that involved “mansplaining” and a customer attempting to belittle a server.

“Oh gosh, there is literally an endless supply here. I have some really weird stories. One time there was this really rich guy who would come in one week a year & was really addicted to mansplaining,” she wrote in her response.

“You could just really tell he got satisfaction from it. He’d love to say ‘ask me a question’ and include all these little asides to belittle the server and uplift himself.”

“Anyways, if you indulged him, he tipped like $200 to $300 on a lunch tab every day for a week straight. Then disappeared till next year,” she added.

Needless to say, this behavior is unacceptable. Imagine a lonely guy coming into a bar, eager to engage with someone, only to be met with belittlement. And yet, he would generously tip $200-$300 just for a moment of conversation before vanishing for a year.

However, AOC faced criticism on Twitter after someone shared the Threads post.

Geoffrey Ingersoll, editor in chief at the Daily Caller, offered a compassionate perspective, but not towards AOC.

“99.9% chance he was a wealthy and quaint old man whose wife had passed a few years ago and who loved reading in retirement and just wanted someone, ANYONE to talk to for a minute. Maybe even childless through no fault of his own, so passing on info to a young server gave him a sense of worth and he was willing to tip well for the opportunity,” he wrote.

Another Twitter user expressed envy, saying, “$1200-$1500 from one week to listen to a guy tell stories while I worked. Guy sounds awesome! I wish I had him visit my establishment when I was younger. Would have been incredible to have such a great week in tips!”

As someone who also worked in the service industry, I can’t help but think how amazing it would be to earn that much in just one week. However, to AOC, it was seen as chauvinistic “mansplaining” and an attempt to belittle the server.

It’s disheartening to see such a distorted and negative worldview. How sad.
