Authorities have identified an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was tragically shot by police on a golf course in Fontana. Alejandro Diaz, 45, of Fontana, was shot on August 15 at the Sierra Lakes Golf Club and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, responsible for investigating lethal force encounters involving Fontana Police Department’s officers, stated, “It is standard protocol through a memo of agreement with the Fontana Police Department.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have not released any further details at this time. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department expressed their deep sadness over the tragic shooting, stating, “This incident is extremely difficult for the family, our personnel, and the officers involved.”
According to KTLA5, the incident began with a 911 call reporting a dispute involving a distraught man at a nearby home. The man, who had been drinking, fired shots into a wall before leaving the residence and heading to the golf course with two guns. Witnesses reported that the man fired multiple shots upon entering the golf course.
Neighbor Myesha Dowe described the terrifying scene, saying, “He lost his edge and just started shooting up the neighborhood. It seems that mental health is real.” Police confronted the suspect and ultimately shot him, though it is unclear if he fired any shots at officers.
Authorities are urging anyone with information on the case to contact the sheriff’s Specialized Investigation Division.
