Tragic Loss: Ray Lewis III, Son of NFL Legend, Dies from Accidental Drug Overdose
Officials announced over the weekend that 28-year-old Ray Lewis III, the son of Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, tragically passed away last week due to an accidental drug overdose.
Lewis III began his college football journey at the University of Miami, following in his father’s footsteps, before transferring to Coastal Carolina in 2015 and ultimately finishing at Virginia Union.
According to a report by TMZ, police responded to a medical emergency call at a Florida residence where they discovered Lewis III unresponsive next to drug paraphernalia. The scene included a pill, a used needle, and a small plastic bag inside an empty alcohol container.
Upon arrival, police found a friend performing CPR on Lewis III while another desperately called for Narcan, a drug used to reverse opioid overdoses. Despite administering Narcan, their efforts were unsuccessful.
“The evidence and witness accounts point to this incident as a tragic accident,” stated Casselberry Police Captain Michael Schaefer. “Our thoughts are with the Lewis family and their loved ones during this difficult time.”
According to the Orlando Sentinel, friends of Lewis III mentioned that he had been displaying unusual behavior prior to his passing.
The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
In the midst of this tragedy, Lewis III’s brother, Rahsaan Lewis, expressed that his brother is now “at peace” and vowed to continue making him proud.
