The Ohio Senate took a bold stand on Wednesday, overriding Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto and passing legislation that puts an end to transgender child mutilation and protects women’s sports in the state. This decision reflects the will of the majority of Ohioans, who believe that transgender athletes should not compete in school sports.
In December 2023, DeWine vetoed HB 68, claiming that gender-confused kids would be at risk of suicide without transgender mutilations or opposite-sex hormones. However, his justification was based on flawed studies, unreliable surveys, and the testimony of gender-crazed parents.
DeWine’s veto did not sit well with his voters or the legislature. Despite his attempts to limit the ban to only mutilating children’s genitals, both the Republican-controlled state House and Senate voted to overrule his objection and prohibit chemical and surgical mutilation of gender-confused children.
Thanks to these Republican legislators, the “Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act” is now law in Ohio. The state not only protects its youngest and most vulnerable residents from gender experimentation but also becomes the 24th state to safeguard female sports from male infiltration.
“Now and always, young people deserve the loving embrace of family members who guide them toward truth, rather than subjecting them to risky and life-altering experimentation and drugs. Ohio joins other states and countries in fighting for truth and curbing the use of harmful surgeries and drugs that are devastating countless lives,” said Matt Sharp, senior counsel and director of ADF’s Center for Legislative Advocacy.

Why do proponents of the bill argue that it is necessary to preserve fairness in women’s sports?
Urgical procedures that could cause irreversible harm. However, the Ohio Senate recognized that this legislation does not prohibit necessary medical interventions for transgender individuals, but rather aims to prevent irreversible surgical procedures on minors who may later regret their decisions.
The passage of this bill is a significant victory for the protection of children’s rights and the preservation of fair competition in women’s sports. Transgender athletes participating in women’s sports have raised concerns among many Ohioans, who believe that natural physiological advantages could create an unfair playing field. This legislation ensures that female athletes have an equal opportunity to excel in their respective sports without facing competition from individuals with inherent physical advantages.
Critics of the bill argue that it discriminates against transgender individuals and infringes upon their rights. They contend that transgender athletes should have the right to participate in sports based on their gender identity, rather than their biological sex. However, it is important to acknowledge that this bill does not ban transgender individuals from participating in sports altogether, but rather establishes a fair playing field for all athletes.
Furthermore, the bill’s provisions align with the opinions of many Ohioans. A recent poll conducted by the state showed that a majority of residents believe transgender athletes should not compete in school sports. This demonstrates that the Ohio Senate’s decision reflects the will of the people.
The passage of this legislation sends a strong message that the Ohio Senate prioritizes the well-being and fairness of its athletes. By protecting children from irreversible surgical procedures, the state ensures that they have the ability to make informed decisions about their bodies when they reach adulthood. Additionally, by preserving fair competition in women’s sports, Ohio empowers female athletes to pursue their passions and excel in their respective fields.
It is important to recognize that the passage of this bill is not intended to demean or marginalize transgender individuals. Rather, it aims to maintain a level playing field and protect the integrity of women’s sports. Transgender athletes can still participate in sports that align with their biological sex, ensuring fairness for all.
In conclusion, the Ohio Senate’s decision to override Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto and pass legislation protecting children from irreversible surgical procedures and preserving fairness in women’s sports reflects the will of the majority of Ohioans. This bill prioritizes the well-being of children and maintains a level playing field in athletic competitions. It is crucial to understand that this legislation does not discriminate against transgender individuals but instead ensures fair competition and protection for all athletes.
