Police say an Oklahoma mother killed her three children before taking her own life in an apparent murder-suicide.

A devastating incident unfolded in Verdigris, Oklahoma, where a mother of three took the lives of her children before ending her own, following a police standoff.
Located just 20 miles outside of Tulsa, the Verdigris Police Department (VPD) received reports of fireworks being set off outside a residence on July 20. Upon arrival, officers discovered an armed woman who had barricaded herself and her children inside the home, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation’s press release.
In an attempt to establish communication, the police brought in a negotiator. However, for three agonizing hours, the mother remained unresponsive, leaving the authorities with no choice but to take action.
Verdigris Police Chief Jack Shackelford shared, “At no time when we were there for that three-hour period did we hear anything from inside the house – nothing – no response, no movement,” as reported by KWTV.
Eventually, officers entered the home and made a horrifying discovery. The mother and her three children, aged 11, 6, and just 10 months old, were found lifeless. Investigators later determined that the mother had shot her children before turning the gun on herself, as reported by Today.
Chief Shackelford revealed that the tragic chain of events began when a woman, who was trapped in the mother’s garage, resorted to shooting fireworks through a window to seek help. The woman, a social worker, had brought one of the mother’s children for a supervised visit. However, the mother pointed a gun at the social worker, took the child, and locked the social worker and two other children inside the garage, according to the Tulsa World.
Fortunately, with the assistance of the police, the unnamed social worker and the two other children managed to escape unharmed.

Chief Shackelford acknowledged that the police were familiar with the mother’s residence due to previous child welfare and domestic violence calls. He stated, “We knew her from previous encounters that we had with that residence and some of the other issues we’d had there before. I knew her by a first name basis and who she was,” in an interview with KWTV.
On the day of the tragedy, Billy Jacobson, the father of one of the children, took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news and requested prayers. He also revealed that the mother had previously attempted to take her own life in January.
Jacobson was the father of the 10-month-old who tragically lost their life.
