Paris 2024 Olympics flame to ignite on April 16, relay to tour overseas territories.
Paris 2024 Olympic Games Flame to be Lit on April 16
By Julien Pretot
The countdown to the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympic Games will officially begin on April 16, as the flame is lit in Greece’s ancient Olympia. This exciting news, which confirms an earlier Reuters story, was announced by the organizers on Friday.
The flame will remain in Greece until its departure to France on April 27, when it will arrive in Marseille on May 8. From there, the torch relay will embark on an incredible journey through metropolitan France, visiting notable cities such as Montpellier, Corsica, Bordeaux, and the Mont Saint Michel, until June 7. On that day, the flame will leave the port city of Brest by boat for a relay in France’s overseas territory, returning to mainland France on June 18.
The boat carrying the flame will be skippered by the esteemed 2017 Vendee Globe winner, Armel Le Cleac’h, promising a truly spectacular showcase of all the territories involved, as stated by Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet at a ceremony held at the Sorbonne university.
The torch relay will continue its journey through Strasbourg, Reims, Lille, and many other cities, culminating in a relay in Paris on July 14-15. This leg of the relay will pass through iconic landmarks such as the Pantheon and the National Assembly and Senate, with a total of approximately 400 towns being visited.
With around 10,000 torchbearers participating in the relays, the Olympic swimming gold medallists Laure and Florent Manaudou, along with para-athlete Dimitri Pavade, will serve as captains for this momentous event.
The lighting of the Olympic flame is a traditional ceremony that takes place at the site of the ancient Games. An actress playing a high priestess uses a parabolic mirror to ignite the torch, which is then passed to the first torchbearer at the edge of the ancient Olympic stadium in Olympia.
Following a brief domestic relay in Greece, the flame will be handed over to the host city. In this case, Paris organizers have planned to transport the flame to Marseille using the three-masted ship ‘Belem,’ where the sailing competitions of the Olympics will take place. This unique mode of transportation adds an extra touch of grandeur to the event, as the flame is usually flown by plane to the host city.
It was also revealed last month that Paris 2024 organizers intend to install the Olympic flame on the iconic Eiffel Tower, further enhancing the symbolic significance of the Games.
Despite recent challenges, including a police raid on their headquarters earlier this week, the organizers can now take a moment to celebrate this significant milestone in the journey towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
