Sweden to proceed with 2030 Winter Games bid
The Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) is ready to make history!
After a four-month feasibility study, it has been revealed that there is significant interest in hosting the Winter Olympics in Stockholm. This would be the first time Sweden, a winter sports powerhouse, would host the prestigious event. Despite unsuccessful bids in the past, including losing out on the 2026 edition to Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo, Stockholm is determined to bring the Winter Games to its city. Fun fact: Stockholm previously hosted the Summer Olympics in 1912.
“Our preliminary study shows that Sweden has the opportunity, know-how, and will to arrange the Winter Games in 2030,” declares SOK president Hans von Uthmann.
The International Olympic Committee had planned to announce the host for 2030 in Mumbai this year, but due to concerns about climate change, the decision has been postponed to the eve of the 2024 Paris Games. This delay has opened up new possibilities for potential hosts.
The Japanese city of Sapporo, a previous Winter Games host, was considered the favorite, but a corruption scandal surrounding the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has put its bid on hold. Salt Lake City in the United States, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002, remains a contender, but it has expressed a preference for the 2034 edition due to the upcoming 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
The IOC is considering awarding the hosting rights for both 2030 and 2034 simultaneously to ensure stability for the Winter Games. It also plans to rotate hosting rights between a select group of cities and regions, as the pool of potential bidders continues to shrink.
