CNN warns: Crucial ocean current system may collapse by 2025.
CNN Warns of Looming “Apocalyptic Scenario” in Atlantic Ocean
CNN’s chief climate correspondent, Bill Weir, delivered a chilling report on Wednesday, revealing that the current heat wave has pushed ocean water temperatures to record levels. He cautioned that this could lead to a catastrophic event in the “big circulation system” of the Atlantic Ocean, potentially occurring as early as 2025.
“Sixty-one Americans will see temperatures rise above 100 degrees over the next seven days. Over in Florida, heat is turning the ocean into something like a hot tub. The water temperatures are at record levels for July, and this has consequences all around the world,” CNN News Central anchor John Berman said on Wednesday.
Unprecedented Coral Reef Loss
Weir further reported that the scorching triple-digit temperatures have already caused significant damage to coral reefs. Some scientists are witnessing complete coral reef loss and bleaching, as sensitive coral starves to death and turns white due to the extreme water temperatures.
However, CNN clarifies that the most significant concentration of coral is not located in the shallower Florida Bay, where the readings were taken.
“All of this is a result of generations of heat-trapping gas and the atmosphere holding down as much extra heat every second as 10 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs,” Weir explained.
He added, “The cold water has masked a lot of that obvious heat, but this year, obviously, you can’t ignore it anymore, and this is just the beginning of a trend that scientists worry could have half of the planet’s surface in a marine heat wave.”
“Sea creatures are facing stresses that are just off the charts right now,” Weir said.
The Threat of the AMOC
The report delves into the alarming predictions surrounding the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a crucial oceanic conveyor belt system. Weir reveals that this triangular-shaped system, responsible for transporting warm water from the Caribbean to Canada and even the U.K., has been weakening due to excessive freshwater discharge from Greenland.
Weir warns that if the AMOC shuts down, it could lead to an “apocalyptic scenario” reminiscent of the movie “The Day After Tomorrow,” which depicted catastrophic climatic effects through extreme weather events.
“There is a tipping point that could happen as early as 2025 and as late as 2090. All signs point to warnings that we’re headed towards that vital tipping point, which must be avoided to preserve life as we know it on the planet,” CNN’s reporter emphasized.
Meanwhile, scientists in Miami are desperately attempting to save corals by relocating them from the ocean to laboratories.
Berman, visibly shaken, concluded the report by describing it as “ominous.”
