20% of Iowa Republicans would not back Trump in a general election, according to a poll.

About one-fifth of ⁣likely Iowa⁢ Republican caucusgoers may not ​support Trump in the ⁢next election

A recent poll reveals that approximately‍ 20% of⁢ likely Iowa Republican ‌caucusgoers would not vote for former President Donald Trump if he becomes their party’s presidential nominee ⁣in the⁤ upcoming general election. However, the majority of those polled, 77%, expressed their support for Trump. The survey conducted by J.L. Partners also found that 6% would ‍vote for President Joe Biden, 10% would ‍choose ​another candidate,‍ 2% would abstain from voting, and 5% were unsure about their decision.

Concerns about Trump’s ‍potential imprisonment

The research further discovered that ⁣nearly 40% of the likely caucusgoers‌ believed Trump should withdraw from the race if he is​ convicted of federal crimes and imprisoned. On the⁢ other‌ hand, 48% stated that they would continue to support the ​former president even if he is incarcerated, while 12% were⁢ undecided.

J.L. Partners, a Republican polling firm, conducted the survey from August 1 to 7, interviewing 600 likely caucusgoers. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 4 points. Trump was arraigned for the third time on August 3, pleading not guilty to charges brought⁤ against him by special⁢ counsel Jack Smith, which relate to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Prosecutors have requested a trial date of January 2.

Other legal challenges ‍faced by Trump

In ‍addition to⁤ the charges related to the election, Trump is also facing federal charges for mishandling classified documents and obstructing Smith’s investigation into the matter. ⁤The‌ trial for these charges is expected to commence in March in Fort Pierce, Florida.

According to RealClearPolitics, Trump currently holds an average of ‍44% support in Iowa, with Governor Ron DeSantis at ⁤17%, Senator ⁣Tim Scott at 10%, biotechnology entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at 5%, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki⁤ Haley at 4%, ‌former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at 3%, and Governor Doug Burgum at 2%.

Many of these candidates will be present in Des Moines, Iowa, either this week or the following week for the state’s annual fair.
