20% of Iowa Republicans would not back Trump in a general election, according to a poll.
About one-fifth of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers may not support Trump in the next election
A recent poll reveals that approximately 20% of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers would not vote for former President Donald Trump if he becomes their party’s presidential nominee in the upcoming general election. However, the majority of those polled, 77%, expressed their support for Trump. The survey conducted by J.L. Partners also found that 6% would vote for President Joe Biden, 10% would choose another candidate, 2% would abstain from voting, and 5% were unsure about their decision.
Concerns about Trump’s potential imprisonment
The research further discovered that nearly 40% of the likely caucusgoers believed Trump should withdraw from the race if he is convicted of federal crimes and imprisoned. On the other hand, 48% stated that they would continue to support the former president even if he is incarcerated, while 12% were undecided.
J.L. Partners, a Republican polling firm, conducted the survey from August 1 to 7, interviewing 600 likely caucusgoers. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 4 points. Trump was arraigned for the third time on August 3, pleading not guilty to charges brought against him by special counsel Jack Smith, which relate to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Prosecutors have requested a trial date of January 2.
Other legal challenges faced by Trump
In addition to the charges related to the election, Trump is also facing federal charges for mishandling classified documents and obstructing Smith’s investigation into the matter. The trial for these charges is expected to commence in March in Fort Pierce, Florida.
According to RealClearPolitics, Trump currently holds an average of 44% support in Iowa, with Governor Ron DeSantis at 17%, Senator Tim Scott at 10%, biotechnology entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at 5%, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley at 4%, former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at 3%, and Governor Doug Burgum at 2%.
Many of these candidates will be present in Des Moines, Iowa, either this week or the following week for the state’s annual fair.
