Ofir Engel, a high school student, was abducted by Hamas terrorists from Kibbutz Be’eri while visiting his girlfriend’s family on October 7. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 100 people in the kibbutz, which has a population of just over a thousand, according to JTA.
Despite the devastating circumstances, Yael remains hopeful that her nephew is still alive. She received information that his cell phone pinged from Gaza on October 8, the day after the attack.
Engel, who holds Dutch citizenship, has garnered attention from the Dutch government, with Engel’s father meeting with officials last week. Yael also mentioned that her father had a meeting with the Qatari Ambassador to the Netherlands. Qatar, the host country of Hamas leadership, has been actively involved in facilitating hostage negotiations.
Hamas is believed to be holding approximately 240 hostages in Gaza. The terrorist group claims that dozens of hostages have been affected by Israeli airstrikes as they strive to eradicate Hamas. So far, only four hostages have been released, and one has been rescued.
