One person dead and several injured after driver rams car into crowd of people in Germany
At least one person was killed and several others injured after the driver of a black SUV rammed into a crowd of people in the western German city of Mannheim, police said Monday.
The driver has been detained, but it is unclear whether there are other suspects, police spokesman Stefan Wilhelm said.
“We can confirm that one perpetrator was arrested,” he added. “We can’t yet give information on whether there were further perpetrators.”
The police force also released a statement saying that a “car drove into a group of people in Mannheim city center” and that “according to the current status of the investigation, one person was killed and several people were injured.”
“No information can be given yet on the number and severity of the injuries,” the police added. “As part of the search measures that were immediately initiated, a suspect was identified and arrested. No further, reliable information can currently be released beyond the information published so far.”
The incident took place in Paradeplatz, a major square in the downtown area of Mannheim, which is about 52 miles south of Frankfurt.
While the police did not immediately call Monday’s event a coordinated “attack,” cars have been used in several acts of violence over the course of the past few months. In February, a mother and her 2-year-old daughter died after a car rammed into a labor union protest in Munich. In that case, a 23-year-old Afghan man who came to Germany as an asylum-seeker was arrested. Prosecutors linked his Islamic extremist ties to a motive.
In December 2024, six people were killed and more than 200 hurt when a car driven by a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian doctor who had anti-Muslim views rammed into a holiday market teeming with shoppers. Among the dead were five women and a 9-year-old boy. A day after the holiday massacre, there was a large right-wing demonstration in Magdeburg.

There has also been an uptick in verbal and physical attacks on people from migrant communities, according to the German-Syrian Cultural Association in Magdeburg.
“The migrant community and the advice centers report that attacks have increased by more than 70% here in the city,” said Saeeid Saeeid, who came to Germany from Syria seven years ago and is a member of the association. “Racism already exists here and everywhere. But it has increased enormously since the attack.”
