One Texas Sector Sees 6,000 Known Migrant Border Crossers in Past Week
The Del Rio Border Patrol Sector agents have reported that over 6,000 migrants have been apprehended or known to have crossed the border illegally and evaded capture in the past week. During March 2023, 24,000 migrants were apprehended, and almost 11,000 got away, as reported by the agents. Sector Chief Patrol Agent, Jason D. Owens tweeted a weekly recap, and during the report, the Acting Eagle Pass South Station Patrol Agent in Charge, Russell Becker, stated that 3,850 migrants were apprehended, which is a decrease from the previous week’s 5,300. Russell also reported that 2,242 migrants were known to have crossed the border without being apprehended compared to just over 3,000 one week earlier.
According to an unofficial report reviewed by Breitbart Texas, 24,000 migrants were apprehended in the Del Rio Sector in March, the highest since September 2021, an increase from February’s 22,543 but a significant reduction from March 2022’s 41,631. The report also states that during FY 2023, which began on October 1, 2022, Del Rio Sector agents apprehended nearly 218,000 migrants, compared to 195,299 apprehended during the same period one year ago. In addition to the apprehensions, another unofficial Border Patrol report states that nearly 82,300 migrants escaped capture, a decrease from the 89,200 reported during the same period last year.
The Sector became one of the busiest sectors in the United States following the surge of Haitian migrants under the international bridge in September 2021. Recently, Republican presidential primary hopeful Nikki Haley visited the Sector border towns of Del Rio and Eagle Pass, where she called for “catch and deport” during her tour of Texas hotspots. Haley thinks that the Biden administration’s policies of releasing apprehended migrants at the border contribute to the record number of migrant apprehensions across the Southwest border and prefers “catch and deport” policies over the current “catch and release” policies.
