Republicans, Reject Ballot Harvesting
Why American Elections Need Urgent Reform
As an international democracy and elections specialist, I have spent over 30 years evaluating the quality of elections and finding ways to improve them. From my experience working with organizations like the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the U.S. government, and private foundations, I can confidently say that American elections are the least secure and most corruptible among developed countries. In fact, they are even less secure and fair than election processes in many developing democracies.
But you don’t need to be an expert to see that something is wrong with our elections.
A recent poll conducted by The Associated Press and the University of Chicago revealed some alarming statistics. Less than half of Americans are confident that the 2024 vote will be counted accurately. 70 percent of Americans support requiring ID to vote. Less than half have confidence in voting machines, and only 30 percent have confidence in mail-in voting.
Confidence in elections is crucial for a democracy. Without trust in the election process, we cannot have confidence in the legitimacy of our elected representatives.
Over the past few years, we have witnessed partisan interference in elections by big business, Big Tech, and government officials. This has left Republicans and conservatives feeling hopeless about ever seeing a fair election again.
Some have suggested that Republicans should adopt the Democrats’ strategy of ballot harvesting and extended voting periods. However, these insecure election processes are not the solution. They only facilitate cheating and give Democrats an advantage. Democrats are more willing to exploit these insecure practices, making it impossible for Republicans to compete fairly.
Instead of fighting on the Democrats’ battlefield, we need to shift the battleground to our advantage. We must move from the courts and institutions to the cognitive battlefield, where we have the upper hand.
While it may seem like the left holds all the power, we still have some asymmetrical powers that we can leverage. We have the support of the people, who believe in free and fair elections. Together, we can challenge the institutions and demand transparent and verifiable election processes that restore confidence in our elections and the democratic legitimacy of our elected representatives.
To achieve this, we need to focus on defining transparent and verifiable election processes in all 50 states and then push state legislatures to enact these reforms. By doing so, we can ensure that the 2024 elections accurately reflect the will of the people and uphold the principles of democracy.
The Democrats’ game is rigged, but we have the power to change the game.
