The Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) inspector general is conducting an investigation regarding the Department of Goverment Efficiency’s (DOGE) access to various government agencies’ data systems. This inquiry was initiated following DOGE’s access to the OPM systems and the creation of an email address used to communicate with federal employees, asking them to report their weekly accomplishments. Concerns have been raised about the lack of oversight concerning DOGE’s activities with OPM’s data, potentially compromising personal privacy and national security. The acting Inspector General, Norbert Vint, emphasized the importance of IT security and promised thorough oversight, especially considering a lawsuit against OPM’s new data system.

The inspector general for the Office of Personnel Management is investigating the Department of Government Efficiency‘s access to data systems across numerous government agencies.
The investigation came as DOGE gained access to OPM systems and created the [email protected] email address, which it used to email federal workers a directive to send a list of five accomplishments to recap their week.

OPM acting Inspector General Norbert Vint sent a letter on Friday to Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee to share that the office is “assess[ing] risks associated with new and modified information systems at OPM.”
“The OPM OIG is committed to providing independent and objective oversight of OPM’s programs and operations,” Vint said. “The OPM OIG also takes seriously the integrity of OPM’s information technology (IT) security program. Our office has long engaged in oversight of OPM’s IT security program not only as required by statute but also based on developing risks identified through our ongoing risk assessment efforts.”
Vint’s remarks came in response to a February letter from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that raised concerns that OPM staffers had “no visibility” into what DOGE was doing with OPM’s data.

“We are deeply concerned that unauthorized system access could be occurring across the federal government and could pose a major threat to the personal privacy of all Americans and to the national security of our nation,” ranking member Gerry Connolly (D-VA) wrote.
OPM is currently facing a lawsuit over its new data system.
