Oscar-Winning Star Alan Arkin Passes Away at 89
The entertainment industry mourns the loss of Alan Arkin, the legendary actor who captivated audiences on both the big screen and Broadway. Arkin’s sons confirmed the news of his passing to People magazine.

Arkin, known for his versatility and ability to disappear into characters, passed away at his home in San Marcos, California. His son, Matthew Arkin, revealed that his father had been battling heart ailments, as reported by the New York Times.
A Career That Shone Bright
Arkin’s career took off after his Tony award-winning performance in the 1963 Broadway comedy “Enter Laughing.” From there, he made a seamless transition to the silver screen, earning his first Oscar nomination for his role in the 1966 war comedy “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.”
Over the course of several decades, Arkin graced both the big and small screens, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. His notable works include “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” (1968), “Catch-22” (1970), “Edward Scissorhands” (1990), and “Glengarry Glen Ross” (1992).
However, it was his portrayal of the endearing grandfather in the 2006 film “Little Miss Sunshine” that earned Arkin an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Despite appearing on screen for just 14 minutes, his performance left a lasting impression.

Arkin’s talent continued to shine in the 2012 film “Argo,” directed by Ben Affleck. In the movie, he portrayed a veteran movie producer who concocts a fake film to rescue hostages in Iran.
A Legacy Remembered
Alan Arkin was born on March 26, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. His family later relocated to Los Angeles during his childhood. He is survived by his third wife, Suzanne Newlander, whom he married in 1996, as well as his three sons from previous marriages. Arkin also leaves behind grandchildren Molly, Emmet, Atticus, and Abigail, along with a great-grandson named Elliott.
