Oscars 2023: Brendan Fraser makes career comeback with best actor win

Brendan Fraser acknowledged how his career turned around with his Academy Award-winning role in The Whale.
“I started in this business 30 years ago, and things didn’t come easily to me,” Fraser said, breathing heavily during his acceptance speech. “I just want to say thank you for this acknowledgment.”

In his first career win and nomination, Fraser took home the Oscar for best actor. He was one of five first-time nominees for the award, including Austin Butler of Elvis, Colin Farrell of The Banshees of Inisherin, Paul Mescal of Aftersun, and Bill Nighy of Living.
Fraser also acknowledged The Whale’s director Darren Aronofsky and others involved in creating the film, thanking them for their “whale-sized hearts.”
In The Whale, Fraser returned to acting prominence with his role as a 600-pound English teacher who becomes housebound and tries to repair his relationship with his daughter.

“We are unbelievably proud — over the moon,” Fraser’s son Holden, 18, reportedly said along with brother Leland, 16, of their father.
