Authorities have seized over 18,000 pounds of cocaine from six separate drug smuggling events last month in San Diego, California. The cocaine, with an estimated street value of over $239 million, was recovered off the coasts of Central America, Mexico, and South America by two U.S. Coast Guard ships in November. This marks a significant achievement in the fight against drug trafficking.
The largest seizure, weighing over 5,500 pounds, was recovered by Coast Guard Cutter Waesche on November 20th. It was found on a narco-submarine, making it a significant milestone as the first semi-submersible interdicted in the Eastern Pacific in over three years, according to Captain Robert Mohr, the commanding officer of the Waesche.
“Our last interdiction of a semi-submersible vessel was noteworthy since it was the first semi-submersible interdicted in the Eastern Pacific in over three years,” said Captain Robert Mohr, the commanding officer of the Waesche.
In addition to the drug seizures, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has announced sanctions against 15 Mexican citizens allegedly involved in drug trafficking. These actions demonstrate the commitment to combatting drug-related crimes.
According to statistics from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, over 40 tons of cocaine have been seized in 2023, making it the third most seized drug behind marijuana and methamphetamines. This highlights the ongoing battle against drug smuggling.
Tara McGrath, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California, expressed gratitude to the Coast Guard for their efforts in seizing the drugs and preventing them from reaching American streets. She emphasized the positive impact of keeping such a large quantity of cocaine away from the public, reducing access to this harmful substance and preventing millions of dollars from flowing into cartel coffers.
“The significance of keeping this much cocaine from reaching our shores and streets is, no doubt, life-changing,” said McGrath. “Without these 9 tons of cocaine on American streets, fewer people will have access to this toxic poison, and hundreds of millions of dollars will not make it into cartel coffers.”
