Get ready for the largest health care strike in U.S. history! Over 75,000 Kaiser Permanente employees have taken to the picket lines, demanding better compensation, benefits, and safer work environments. This massive strike, organized by the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, is set to continue until Saturday morning.
The coalition, consisting of eight unions, represents about 40% of Kaiser Permanente’s workforce. Employees in California, Colorado, Washington, Virginia, Oregon, and Washington, DC are participating in the strike. They are fighting not only for their own rights but also for the quality of patient care, as staffing shortages have put immense pressure on the workers and compromised the well-being of those they serve.
Caroline Lucas, executive director of the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, expressed concern over the hazardous working conditions and declining patient care caused by the staff shortage. “We have folks getting injured on the job because they’re trying to do too much and see too many people and work too quickly. It’s not a sustainable situation,” she stated.
“We continue to have front-line health care workers who are burnt out and stretched to the max and leaving the industry,” Lucas said in a statement. “We have folks getting injured on the job because they’re trying to do too much and see too many people and work too quickly. It’s not a sustainable situation,” she continued.
Kaiser Permanente acknowledged the stress experienced by healthcare workers and pledged to work towards a fair agreement. However, the union coalition accuses management of failing to address their concerns, leading to this historic strike. The coalition described the 3-day strike as a protest against “bad faith bargaining” by Kaiser executives.
Despite reporting a profit of $2 billion in the second quarter, Kaiser’s management has been criticized for not prioritizing the well-being of its employees. The strike includes various healthcare roles, such as emergency department technicians, radiology technicians, X-ray technicians, respiratory therapists, medical assistants, and pharmacists.
Kaiser Permanente serves nearly 13 million patients across eight states and the District of Columbia. The organization has contingency measures in place to ensure patient care continues during the strike.
