Raskin, Oversight ranking member, deems GOP’s Biden investigation a ‘complete failure’.
House Republicans Launch Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden
As the House returns from August recess, Republicans are gearing up to vote on opening an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. In response, House Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is taking a proactive approach. He has circulated a memo to House Democrats, combatting the investigations and possible impeachment inquiry.
Raskin Challenges House Republicans’ Probe
In a 14-page memo obtained by the Washington Examiner, Raskin lays out his judgment of House Republicans’ probe into Biden. He argues that the information gathered by House Republicans does not demonstrate any wrongdoing by Biden. Instead, he suggests that it is an attempt to serve former President Donald Trump’s interests and divert attention from his legal troubles.
Impending Impeachment Inquiry
Raskin pushes back against the impending impeachment inquiry into Biden in the memo. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had previously stated that the House could open an impeachment inquiry into the president upon their return from the break. However, any impeachment inquiry would require a full House vote.
The inquiry’s fate hinges, in part, on whether the Biden administration continues to withhold evidence requested by the committee, according to McCarthy.
Raskin Counters Allegations Against Biden
In his memo, Raskin accuses Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) of misrepresenting and distorting a substantial body of evidence to make baseless and sensationalistic claims. This includes the allegation that Biden himself received money from foreign entities.
While Republicans on the committee, led by Comer, have uncovered extensive evidence of financial transactions involving Hunter Biden and other members of the Biden family with foreign oligarchs and companies during Joe Biden’s vice presidency, they have not proven that any of that money went to the president.
Raskin Dismisses Republican Investigation
“House Republicans constantly insist that they are investigating President Biden, and not his adult son,” the memo reads. “In that case, we can form an obvious judgment on their investigation: it has been a complete and total bust—an epic flop in the history of congressional investigations.”
The memo goes on to state that the evidence gathered overwhelmingly demonstrates no wrongdoing by President Biden and debunks Republicans’ conspiracy theories.
Testimony from Hunter Biden’s former business associate, Devon Archer, revealed that then-Vice President Joe Biden had frequent communication with his son and business associates over the course of a decade. Archer also testified that Hunter Biden used the “Biden brand” to attract foreign companies and oligarchs who believed it would grant them access to his father. Additionally, it was uncovered that Joe Biden attended dinners with foreign oligarchs who had paid his son.
Republicans Accused of Distraction Tactics
Raskin suggests that House Republicans’ focus on the Biden family and their contemplation of an impeachment inquiry into the president are merely attempts to divert attention from Trump’s legal troubles. He argues that this is a transparent effort to boost Trump’s campaign by establishing a false moral equivalency between the two presidents.
Raskin quotes statements from Trump, where he demanded that House Republicans investigate Joe Biden and impeach him.
Despite Raskin’s claims, recent polling indicates that the investigations and findings resonate with voters. According to CNN, 61% of Americans believe that Joe Biden had some involvement in Hunter Biden’s business dealings, with 42% saying they think he acted illegally and 18% saying he acted unethically but not illegally.
