A recent survey unveiled an astonishing 68% of Americans backing legislation that would compel ByteDance, tied to the Chinese government, to relinquish its TikTok shares. This bill has navigated through the GOP-led House and anticipates Senate deliberation.
Insights from the Poll
The poll, orchestrated by Public Opinion Strategies and publicized by America 2100, showcased bipartisan agreement with 73% of Republicans, along with 64% of Democrats and 65% of independents, supporting the legislation. Notably, 75% of Trump supporters and 67% of Biden voters concur, while 56% of TikTok users resonate with the sentiment.
“Americans acknowledge the threat posed by China and reject the dominance of a hostile foreign power controlling their social media platforms,” emphasized Nate Hochman, Senior Advisor at America 2100. The impending decision in the Senate will test the balance between appeasing a vocal activist base and honoring the stance of the majority favoring the expulsion of the Chinese Communist Party from our tech sphere,” he added.
ByteDance’s involvement with TikTok has sparked widespread awareness, with a staggering 84% of Americans recognizing TikTok’s Chinese ownership. Moreover, 73% express concerns over TikTok’s Chinese ties.
On March 13, the House greenlit a bill that may potentially lead to TikTok’s prohibition unless ByteDance sells its stake in the platform.
Legislative Progress and Impact
The bill, dubbed the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” gained a resounding 352-65 nod in the House, with 50 Democrats and 15 Republicans voting against it.

The bill stipulates that any entity in breach of the legislation could face civil penalties based on the number of users within U.S. borders engaging with a foreign-controlled application.
It shall be illegal for an entity to facilitate the distribution, maintenance, or updating of a foreign adversary controlled application in the U.S. by providing services through an online marketplace or offering internet hosting for such applications used by U.S. users.
The potential repercussions are substantial as TikTok disclosed boasting 150 million American users by March 2023.
