OWENS: The Five Reasons Why I Went From Pro-Choice To Pro-Life

I am supposed to be on maternity leave this month as I await the birth of my second child, but the issue of Roe v. Wade being overturned is so important that I feel compelled to add my voice to the discussion.

As many of you know, for the majority of my life, I was pro-choice, but I’m now pro-life. These are the five reasons why.

Women Under Duress

Over the course of my life, I’ve seen firsthand that most women get abortions not because it’s “their choice,” but because they are under duress or because they are fearful. This is one reason I’m no longer pro-choice. 

My introduction to the topic of abortion came when I was about ten years old and a cousin of mine became pregnant. Despite how young she was — about fifteen or sixteen — she wanted to keep her child. But her family said no. In fact, her family was so determined to convince her to abort her child that they arrived to meet face to face with her and hammer into her mind that having the baby would ruin her life. There were a lot of tears — because she wanted her child. Ultimately, though, she gave in to the pressure.

My second introduction to the topic of abortion came when I was just entering high school. Another cousin of mine became pregnant. She wasn’t a teenager and she knew she wanted to keep her son, but a boyfriend didn’t want her to keep him. That boyfriend put a lot of pressure on her to have an abortion, and it escalated to the point that he broke into her home, threatening her, and trying to physically harm her to compel her to get the procedure. 

I’ve known six more women since who have gotten an abortion, and it’s always the same scenario. Moms are upset. Parents are upset. Your friends tell you that your whole life is going to be ruined. Your boyfriend tells you that you’re going to ruin his life. Women aren’t “exercising their rights,” they are operating under duress. It’s a game of peer pressure. 

The tragic reality is far from all those media depictions pretending that women are skipping into the clinic by their own free will, empowered, flowery, and leaving feeling great about ending the life of their child. No, that’s not what’s happening. You know that. I know that. 

The media is lying to you, celebrities are lying to you. They’re treating the issue of abortion like the cigarette campaign back in the ’60s. “Oh how cool, getting an abortion!” “My body, my choice!” These are forms of propaganda. They are lies. The truth is that abortions harm people. They harm women, physically and spiritually. 

Call Abortion What It Is

Another reason I’ve rejected my former pro-choice stance is that, at this point, we’re no longer debating abortion anymore. I was speaking to my husband earlier — as many of you know, he’s from the United Kingdom — and it shocks him to see how far women are going: threatening to kill Supreme Court justices, standing outside screaming like they’ve been possessed by a demon.

Take a look at this picture from outside the Supreme Court.

You have a woman who’s easily seven, eight, maybe nine months pregnant. And she’s written on her body “not yet a human.” What is that, if not a demonic possession? What sort of a woman would do that?

That’s what we’re talking about in America now. You have people who are saying that women should be allowed to get an abortion up to nine months in the womb.

I’m nine months pregnant. I’m due to give birth in a week and a half. There are people who believe that I should be able to just stroll into a clinic and have this child removed from me — this child I feel kicking in my belly every second of the day.

We’re talking about child sacrifice. In fact, it reminds me of a book that I read about Native Americans, specifically Aztecs and the horrific child and human sacrifices that took place on a mass scale. 

Now, we look back at that and we think, “That sounds so barbaric. That could never happen in society today, it’s 2022.” But in America, there are approximately 890,000 abortions per a year. Now, we’re not building some big temple and sacrificing these children to gods. Instead, we’re doing it for convenience. We’re doing it because “I’m not ready to be a mom,” or “I don’t want to be a father, so get an abortion.” “This baby will get in the way of my career.” 

That seems even worse than what the Aztecs were doing. America is unlike any other country in the world in this regard. In fact, the only country that we are similar to when it comes to our strategy
