Parental Rights Coalition and Opponents Clash in LA Over Hidden Gender Transitions.
Parental Rights Advocates March Against Secret Gender Transitions in California Schools
LOS ANGELES—Around 200 passionate parental rights demonstrators took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles on August 22, 2023, to protest the secret gender transitions happening in California public schools. The march, known as Leave Our Kids Alone, was organized by several groups including SoCal Parent Advocates, Dad Army, and Mom Army, who strongly oppose the “indoctrination,” “sexualization,” and “grooming” of children in schools.
The coalition is advocating for parental notification policies that would require school staff to inform parents if their children identify as transgender or express a gender different from the sex listed on their birth certificate.

The demonstrators gathered outside Los Angeles City Hall and marched to Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters, where some even sat in the intersection. Counter-protesters waving Pride flags and claiming to support LGBT youth met them there, leading to a tense standoff with the police forming skirmish lines to keep the groups separated.
Despite the police declaring the protest an unlawful assembly and shutting it down, both groups remained in the area for several hours before dispersing.
Parental Pushback
In recent weeks, parental rights advocacy groups have been pushing back against legislation promoting non-notification to parents and guardians and what they call “gender-affirming care.” California State Assemblyman Bill Essayli (R-Riverside) introduced Assembly Bill 1314 in February, which aimed to require school districts to notify parents within three days if their child changes their gender identity at school. However, the bill was killed before it could be heard in committee.
Chino Valley Unified School District became the first in the state to approve a policy similar to AB 1314, requiring school staff to inform parents if their child identifies as a gender other than their biological sex. Since then, three other districts—Murrieta Valley Unified, Temecula Valley Unified, and Anderson Union High School District—have followed suit, with Orange Unified set to decide in September.
Opponents argue that parental notification policies can put LGBT students at risk if their families are unsupportive of their chosen gender identity. However, parental rights advocates believe that these policies are necessary to protect their rights and prevent what they see as a harmful ideology being promoted to their children without their knowledge.
Parental rights advocate Ben Richards, who founded SoCal Parent Advocates, emphasized the unity and love within the movement. He stated, ”We believe that we need to have this law in place to protect our parental rights because we see a radical gender ideology in the public schools being celebrated to our children behind our backs.”
Lusine Karikosyan, a parent with children in the Los Angeles Unified School District, expressed frustration with the lack of support from the school board. She mentioned a recent incident where parents protested a Pride assembly at Saticoy Elementary School, but the school board sided with counter-protesters wearing Antifa face masks. Karikosyan believes that parental rights are being misconstrued as hateful and that the left-wing groups are targeting and attacking parents who advocate for their rights.
Parental rights advocates are determined to continue their fight for parental notification policies and plan to support like-minded candidates in the upcoming 2024 elections.
