Over 1,000 School Districts Keep Parents in the Dark About Children’s Transgender Identification
According to Parents Defending Education (PDE), more than 1,000 school districts in the United States have policies that hide a student’s transgender status from their parents. This alarming revelation comes from PDE’s updated list of school districts that have implemented such policies, affecting a staggering 10.7 million American schoolchildren.
On September 11, PDE released their updated list, which can be found here. These policies recommend that district personnel keep a student’s transgender identification hidden from parents.
PDE President Nicole Neily expressed her concern about the growing number of districts adopting these policies, blaming state school board associations and LGBT activist groups for their influence. She emphasized the importance of reminding families that these associations are not their allies.
GLSEN and The Trevor Project, both LGBT activist organizations, are among the groups pushing for these policies. GLSEN’s guidelines for schools advise educators to keep students’ gender identity a secret from their parents. The Trevor Project’s “Model School District Policy on Suicide Prevention” also recommends hiding a student’s sexual orientation or gender identity from parents in certain situations.
PDE is dedicated to protecting parental rights and has conducted a poll showing that the majority of registered voters support legislation requiring schools to inform parents about their children’s gender identity changes and obtain parental consent before any transitions occur.
Parental rights groups have been exposing instances where schools have secretly transitioned students without parental knowledge. However, some schools, like the Temecula Valley Unified School District, are taking steps to protect parental rights by implementing policies that require parental notification regarding their child’s transgender identification.
It is crucial to prioritize parental involvement in children’s lives, as families play a vital role in their education and well-being. PDE aims to raise awareness about the assault on parental rights and ensure that families are not kept at arm’s length when it comes to their children’s education.

While schools are meant to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students, the decision to hide a student’s transgender status from their parents raises significant ethical and legal concerns. It is a violation of parental rights and disregards the important role parents play in their child’s life and education.
According to PDE’s investigation, these policies have been implemented mainly under the guise of protecting a student’s privacy and promoting their emotional well-being. However, keeping parents unaware of their child’s transgender identification can have serious consequences. Parents may miss out on important information regarding their child’s social, emotional, and medical needs. They may also be unable to provide the necessary support and obtain appropriate resources for their child.
Furthermore, denying parents access to this information undermines trust between schools and families. Open communication and cooperation between schools and parents are crucial for a student’s academic success and overall well-being. By excluding parents from their child’s transgender identification, schools send a message that their input and involvement are unnecessary or unwelcome.
It is also important to highlight the potential risks involved in keeping a student’s transgender status hidden. Without proper transparency, schools may inadvertently contribute to situations where students face discrimination, bullying, or a lack of appropriate accommodations. Parents should be aware of any potential challenges their child may face and be equipped to advocate for their rights and well-being.
The issue at hand goes beyond the specific policy recommendations made by these school districts. It raises broader questions about parental rights, transparency, and the appropriate involvement of schools in personal matters. School districts must prioritize the well-being and holistic development of all students and recognize the crucial role parents play in achieving that outcome.
Parents have a right to be fully informed about their child’s educational experience and any aspects that may impact their well-being and development. This includes their child’s transgender identification. School districts should reassess their policies and ensure that they align with principles of transparency, parental involvement, and respect for individual rights.
As concerned members of society, it is essential to advocate for open and inclusive educational environments that prioritize the well-being and rights of all students. Engaging in dialogue with school boards, policymakers, and education advocacy groups can help bring about positive change and ensure that no child’s identity is hidden from their parents, nurturing a culture of trust, collaboration, and support within our schools.
