Paris 2024 medals to include Eiffel Tower iron
The 2024 Summer Olympics Medals: A Fusion of Tradition and French Heritage
Exciting news for athletes participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris! The medals they will receive are not just your ordinary gold, silver, and bronze. These medals will have a special touch of French history and culture, as they will be adorned with iron from the iconic Eiffel Tower.
“In keeping with tradition, the medals are gold, silver and bronze,” a release posted to the Olympics website read.
“However, unlike any of the approximately 36,600 medals that have been awarded since Athens 1896, the first modern Olympic Games, these will each be adorned with a small piece of Paris and a symbol of the country of France: the Eiffel Tower.”
The brilliant idea to incorporate the Eiffel Tower metal into the medals came from Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee. He wanted to create a fusion of the precious metals and the most precious metal in France, the Eiffel Tower.
“There was a huge amount done to try to bring together these precious metals — gold, silver and bronze — with the most precious metal in the Eiffel Tower, the jewel in the French crown. So what’s specific about the 2024 medals is that meshing together, that fusion, that alloy,” Estanguet said.
“What’s impactful for this year will be having a part of the original Eiffel Tower metal, the iron, in these various medals, and so this is what we wanted to do, to infuse all these 2024 athletes with that metal.”
Once the decision was made, the task of crafting these unique medals was entrusted to the expert jewelry maker Chaumet. The iron from the Eiffel Tower was carefully cut into hexagons, a geometric shape that symbolizes French mobilization, and it will retain its original color.
At least 5,084 medals have been meticulously created for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic games, each featuring a piece of the Eiffel Tower iron. Placed in the center and embossed with the emblem of the Paris 2024 Games, this heritage piece elegantly complements the gold, silver, and bronze, giving the medals a stunning two-tone effect.
Get ready for an Olympics like no other, where athletes will not only compete for glory but also carry a piece of French history with them. The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will truly be a celebration of tradition, athleticism, and the enduring spirit of the Eiffel Tower.
What is the significance of using recycled materials, like Eiffel Tower iron, in the construction of the Olympic medals?
Hat have been awarded at previous Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020 included, the 2024 Summer Olympic medals will contain a small amount of iron from the Eiffel Tower,” it added.
The decision to incorporate the iron from the Eiffel Tower into the medals is a nod to France’s rich cultural heritage and the significance of the iconic landmark. The Eiffel Tower, completed in 1889, has become a symbol of France and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. By using iron from the Eiffel Tower, the medals will not only represent the athletic achievements of the Olympic participants but also the bond between the games and the host country.
Not only is the use of Eiffel Tower iron a symbol of French heritage, but it also adds an element of sustainability to the medals. The decision to recycle materials and incorporate them into the medals highlights the Olympic Committee’s commitment to promoting environmentally friendly practices. This eco-conscious approach sets an example for future Olympic events to prioritize sustainability and reduce waste.
Each medal will feature a design that celebrates French culture and includes motifs that reflect the vibrant spirit of the host city. The front of the medal will showcase the Olympic rings, while the reverse side will feature iconic landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower and other notable French symbols. These designs will serve as a constant reminder of the 2024 Summer Olympics and the cultural significance of hosting the games in Paris.
The fusion of tradition and French heritage in the medals for the 2024 Summer Olympics not only adds a unique element to these prestigious awards but also showcases the importance of embracing and celebrating cultural identity. By incorporating iron from the Eiffel Tower, the medals pay homage to the country’s rich history and heritage, while also promoting sustainability and environmentally friendly practices.
Athletes who participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics will not only be competing for gold, silver, and bronze but will also have the opportunity to take home a piece of French culture and history. The fusion of tradition and innovation in the design of these medals serves as a reminder of the Olympic Games’ ability to unite athletes and countries from different backgrounds and cultures.
As the countdown to the 2024 Summer Olympics begins, athletes and spectators can look forward to not only witnessing incredible athletic performances but also being a part of a celebration that embraces tradition, showcases cultural heritage, and promotes sustainability. The medals of the 2024 Summer Olympics will undoubtedly serve as a lasting symbol of French history and the achievements of the world’s greatest athletes.
