Jet Engine Maker Pratt & Whitney Shows “Solid Progress” at Paris Airshow

Jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney has addressed a key concern for planemakers at the Paris Airshow, signaling “solid progress” in the aerospace supply chain. This comes as the event sees bumper orders from Indian airlines, eager to capitalize on the rebound in travel since the pandemic. The recovery, however, has been more challenging for suppliers, who are grappling with rising costs, parts shortages, and a scarcity of skilled labor.

These challenges have raised concerns about whether Airbus and Boeing will be able to meet their ambitious goals to ramp up output and meet delivery targets for customers. The recent orders from India alone have added almost 1,000 planes to the industry backlog.

Pratt & Whitney, a unit of RTX (formerly known as Raytheon Technologies), has faced difficulties due to problems with its GTF engine, resulting in the grounding of several planes. However, the company stated that the groundings peaked at 10% of the GTF-powered fleet in the first half of this year and are expected to decrease throughout the rest of the year.

Pratt & Whitney President Shane Eddy, who has faced backlash from airlines over durability problems and a shortage of spare engines, expressed optimism about the supply chain’s progress. While the company has the capacity to support maintenance demand, it still faces material shortages.

Meanwhile, jetmakers continue to sign new deals. Aircraft leasing company Avolon announced a memorandum of understanding to order 20 widebody Airbus A330neo aircraft. Airbus is also close to a potentially large deal with Mexico’s Viva Aerobus.
