Patrick wants to rebrand the New York strip as ‘Texas strip’ – Washington Examiner

Texas Lt.⁤ Governor Dan Patrick has proposed rebranding the New York strip steak as the “Texas‌ Strip” to honor ‌texas ranchers and promote the state’s cattle industry, wich boasts the highest number of cattle in the U.S. Patrick made this suggestion‌ during a meeting with the ‍Texas Cattle Feeders and Cattle Raisers, emphasizing that the name “New York Strip” originated from a 19th-century restaurant and does not reflect Texas’s⁣ meaningful contribution to beef production. He plans to introduce a ⁢resolution in the Texas senate to officially change the name and encourages restaurants to update their menus accordingly. This proposal has generated mixed reactions, with some ‌supporting the change while others, including⁣ celebrity chef Andrew Gruel, suggested renaming a⁤ different cut. Patrick⁢ aims to elevate Texas’s beef image against the backdrop of New York’s representation.

Dan Patrick wants to rebrand New York strip steak as ‘Texas Strip’

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has beef with the famous New York strip steak, believing it should be rebranded to represent Texas.

“Texas has about 12.2 million head of cattle, the most in America. I met with the Texas Cattle Feeders and Cattle Raisers this week,” he wrote on X.

“Out of curiosity, I asked each of them their favorite cut of meat. A few said New York Strip,” he continued.

The lieutenant governor for the Lone Star State went on to question the norm of likening the steak to the state of New York.

“I asked why we didn’t call it a ‘Texas Strip’ because New York has mostly dairy cows. Just because a New York restaurant named Texas beef a New York Strip in the 19th century doesn’t mean we need to keep doing that,” Patrick said.

“The Texas Senate will file a concurrent resolution to officially change the name of the New York Strip to the ‘Texas Strip’ in the Lone Star State,” he added.

He called on restaurants “to change the name of this strip of meat the next time they reprint their menus.”

“Liberal New York shouldn’t get the credit for our hard-working ranchers,” Patrick said. “We promote the Texas brand on everything made or grown in Texas because it benefits our economy and jobs.”

Celebrity chef Andrew Gruel agrees with changing the name but has a suggestion for the lieutenant governor.

“I like the idea,” Gruel told the Washington Examiner. “However, the New York strip is one of the most overrated cuts. I think Texas should rename the Flat Iron, which is a much more flavorful cut [that] New York is trying to co-opt by virtue of their ‘flat iron’ district.”

Netizens also reacted to Patrick’s proposal.

“I raise Texas Beef, I support this. But the Yankees are going to cry,” a Texas rancher responded on X.

“The Associations should file that trademark application pronto,” another user said.

“Lone star loin,” someone else quipped.

“The Gulf of America has encouraged Texas. Yay!” another person responded.

According to the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association’s website, it represents more than 28,000 beef cattle producers and ranching families that manage approximately four to five million cattle each year.
