Paul Pelosi Attacker Found Guilty In Federal Case
Federal Jury Finds David DePape Guilty in Hammer Attack on Paul Pelosi
A federal jury in San Francisco on Thursday delivered a guilty verdict against David DePape for the October 2022 hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
Following a four-day trial, DePape, 43, now faces up to 50 years in prison for one count of assault on the immediate family member of a federal official and attempted kidnapping of a federal official. Sentencing is expected in the future.
“The Pelosi family is very proud of their Pop, who demonstrated extraordinary composure and courage on the night of the attack a year ago,” read a statement from a spokesperson for Rep. Pelosi. “Thankfully, Mr. Pelosi continues to make progress in his recovery.”
According to prosecutors, DePape broke into the Pelosis’ home in San Francisco with a violent plan to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, who was not present at the time, and hold her hostage. Paul Pelosi managed to call the police, and body camera footage showed DePape attacking him with a hammer before being apprehended by law enforcement.
Paul Pelosi suffered a skull fracture and other injuries but was released from the hospital in early November 2022. During the trial, he shared details of the harrowing experience, stating, “I’ve made the best effort I possibly can to not relive this.”
DePape’s defense attorneys did not dispute the attack but focused on his intent, arguing that his actions were driven by conspiracy theories and a desire to expose corruption. However, prosecutors maintained that DePape targeted Pelosi because of her high-level position and sought retaliation by attacking her husband.
The 12-member jury unanimously found DePape guilty on both counts after several hours of deliberation.
“This verdict sends a clear message that regardless of your beliefs, physically attacking a member of Congress or their immediate family for their job performance is unacceptable,” said U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey.
In addition to the federal charges, DePape also faces state charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, and threats to a public official and their family. He has pleaded not guilty, and the state case is scheduled for trial later this month.

What impact does the trial and sentencing of David DePape have on deterring future acts of violence against government officials and their families
“The jury’s verdict sends a strong message that acts of violence against government officials or their family members will not be tolerated,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney, Emily Lawson. “We are committed to protecting the safety and security of our public servants and their loved ones.”
The incident occurred on October 8, 2022, when DePape, armed with a hammer, approached Paul Pelosi as he was leaving a restaurant in San Francisco. Witnesses reported that DePape shouted threats at Pelosi before swinging the hammer at him, striking him in the face and causing serious injuries.
Pelosi was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair the damage caused by the attack. Thankfully, he has since made a remarkable recovery and is expected to regain full function.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, although authorities suspect it may have been politically motivated due to Pelosi’s relation to the prominent Democratic figure, Nancy Pelosi. However, no concrete evidence has been presented to confirm this speculation.
During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including video footage from the scene and testimonies from witnesses who witnessed the attack. The defense attempted to argue that DePape suffered from a mental illness at the time of the incident, but this claim was refuted by expert witnesses who testified that DePape was mentally fit to stand trial.
The jury clearly found the evidence against DePape convincing, as they deliberated for only a few hours before reaching a unanimous guilty verdict. This decision highlights the seriousness of the crime committed and the weight of the evidence presented.
The guilty verdict carries severe consequences for DePape, who now faces up to 50 years in federal prison. In addition to the charges of assault and attempted kidnapping, his actions have violated the federal statutes that protect government officials and their immediate family members from harm.
While this case may be seen as an isolated incident, it raises concerns about the safety and security of public officials and their families, who often find themselves in the spotlight due to their positions. It is imperative for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant in protecting these individuals and ensuring that justice is served in cases of violence or threats against them.
As the trial concludes, attention will now turn to the upcoming sentencing. The court will take into consideration the nature of the crime, the impact on the victim and his family, and any mitigating or aggravating factors presented by both the prosecution and defense. The sentencing decision will aim to both punish the offender and deter others from committing similar acts of violence.
In a society that values the rule of law and respect for democratic institutions, it is crucial that we condemn all acts of violence against public officials and their families. The verdict in the trial of David DePape serves as a reminder that such actions will not go unpunished.
Moving forward, it is essential for government officials and their loved ones to be vigilant and take appropriate security measures to ensure their safety. Likewise, the authorities must continue to prioritize the protection of these individuals, recognizing the importance of safeguarding their well-being as they carry out their duties on behalf of the public.
The trial of David DePape has brought attention to the need for a society that respects the principles of democracy and condemns violence against those who serve. By holding individuals accountable for their actions, we can strive towards a safer and more secure future for our public servants and their families.”
