Paul Ryan warns GOP: Trump nomination increases chances of losing.
Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan: GOP’s Odds of Winning in 2024 Increase Without Trump
In a recent appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box, former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan expressed his belief that the Republican Party has a better chance of winning the presidency in 2024 if they nominate someone other than former President Donald Trump. Ryan emphasized the need for the party to move on from Trump, citing his “baggage” as a hindrance to their success.
“It’s a disaster if we nominate Trump,” Ryan stated. “I think we’re much more likely to lose — we haven’t won anything with him since he first won in ’16. We lost the House in ‘18, the presidency in ‘20, the Senate in ’20, and we could have won the Senate in 2022 but for him. I think we lose with him.”
Ryan acknowledged that while there is a chance of Trump winning against President Joe Biden, he believes that other Republican candidates have better odds. He expressed his support for any Republican candidate not named Trump, as he believes they would have a stronger chance of defeating Biden in the upcoming election.
According to a poll by Morning Consult, Trump currently holds a 57% approval rating among potential Republican primary voters. He enjoys a significant lead of 38 points over second-place candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who is supported by 19%.
