Pelosi undergoes hip replacement surgery after fall in Luxembourg
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) underwent hip replacement surgery after being hospitalized with injuries from a fall on Friday during a congressional trip to Luxembourg.
Details of her condition were not immediately available, but her office confirmed on Saturday that Pelosi “underwent a successful hip replacement” and is now “well on the mend.” Pelosi was treated at both the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as the Landstuhl Army Base in Germany as well as Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg, according to the statement.
“Speaker Pelosi is enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes and is ever determined to ensure access to quality health care for all Americans,” Pelosi spokesperson Ian Krager said in the statement.
Due to her fall on Friday, Pelosi abstained from participating in scheduled events to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Multiple outlets at the time reported that the hospitalization was due to a fall on the stairs, while the New York Times said Pelosi fractured her hip, citing sources close to her.
The speaker emerita is the latest elder leader to face an injury this week. Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) fell leaving a GOP lunch on Tuesday, leaving him with a sprained wrist. He also had a scratch on his face that bled but was “100%” with it mentally, according to Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY).
