Pence is the initial GOP candidate to visit Ukraine and meet Zelensky.
Former Vice President Mike Pence Visits Ukraine, Expresses Support for Ukrainian Defense
Former Vice President Mike Pence, a candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, embarked on a significant trip to Ukraine on Thursday. During his visit, Pence met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighting his commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense.
Pence’s journey took him to several cities, including Moshchun, Bucha, and Irpin. These cities hold great significance as they were occupied by Russian forces and allegedly witnessed widespread war crimes. Pence’s presence in these areas came at a crucial time, as Kyiv was engaged in a counteroffensive against Russia.
Pence’s Determination to Support Ukraine
“I believe America is the leader of the free world,” Pence expressed in an interview with NBC News. “But coming here just as a private citizen — being able to really see firsthand the heroism of the Ukrainian soldiers holding the line in those woods, see the heroism of the people here in Irpin that held back the Russian army, to see families whose homes were literally shelled in the midst of an unconscionable and unprovoked Russian invasion — just steels my resolve to do my part, to continue to call for strong American support for our Ukrainian friends and allies.”
Mykhailo Podolyak, a top adviser to President Zelensky, praised Pence’s understanding of the Russian threat. Pence’s visit marks him as the first declared candidate for the 2024 presidential race to meet with Zelensky, showcasing his dedication to Ukraine’s cause.
While some Republican candidates have expressed varying levels of interest in continuing the Biden administration’s support for Ukraine, Pence has consistently shown his support for Ukraine’s defense. This divergence among GOP hopefuls reflects a broader divide within the party regarding the extent of U.S. involvement and the cost associated with arming Ukraine.
Pence’s Call for American Leadership
“I’m here because it’s important that the American people understand the progress that we’ve made and how support for the Ukrainian military has been in our national interest,” Pence emphasized. “I truly do believe that now, more than ever, we need leaders in our country who will articulate the importance of American leadership in the world.”
Pence’s former boss, former President Donald Trump, has been less forthcoming about his plans to address the conflict. However, he has stated on multiple occasions that he would end the war within one day. Other candidates, such as Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, have expressed differing views on the matter.
Pence’s visit to Ukraine last year, prior to entering the presidential primary, demonstrates his ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense and his determination to be a leader who prioritizes American global leadership.
