Pence pans Trump attorneys for giving ‘wrong’ advice on Jan. 6, teases 2024 decision
Former Vice President Mike Pence criticized former President Donald Trump’s lawyers for giving him “wrong” advice leading up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Trump repeatedly criticized Pence for not decertifying the 2020 election, something that Pence argued he did not have the power to do. In response to Trump’s recent assertion that Pence shares blame for the Jan. 6 riot, Pence noted that at least one of Trump’s lawyers seemed to agree with this sentiment.
Pence told Johnathan Karl in an interview for ABC’s “This Week,” “I know one of the attorneys that was advising the President said the same thing in a text on January the sixth but his attorneys were wrong.”
Trump rebuked Pence last week as he considers a 2024 presidential run, saying, “Had he sent the votes back to the legislatures, they wouldn’t have had a problem with Jan. 6, so in many ways, you can blame him.” In response, Pence stated that “President Trump is wrong” and emphasized that he and his team carried out their duty that day by following the “express language of the Constitution.”
Pence also revealed that he and Trump “parted amicably” on Jan. 20, but after hearing Trump’s “return to that type of rhetoric in the spring of 2021, we’ve just gone our separate ways.”
Pence has recently announced trips to Iowa and New Hampshire, fueling speculation about a possible 2024 presidential bid. When asked about his future plans, Pence stated that he has received “a lot of encouragement” to run and that he and his family will base their decision on what they feel called to do.
