Pence salutes ‘return of order and civility’ to Jan. 6 election certification

The joint session of Congress’s certification of the 2024 presidential election Monday was significantly less eventful than the 2021 session to certify the 2020 election, a fact former Vice President Mike Pence commended.

The 2020 election certification by Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, was interrupted by a violent mob, while Monday’s session marked the first time since 1989 that a presidential victory in the Electoral College was not objected to by some members of Congress. In 2001, 2005, and 2017, Democrats objected to GOP victories, while in 2021, Republicans objected to President Joe Biden’s victory.

Pence, who presided over the 2021 session and rejected calls from his fellow Republicans not to certify the 2020 election results, celebrated the peaceful joint session of Congress and congratulated his former running mate, President-elect Donald Trump, on his victory.

“The peaceful transfer of power is the hallmark of our democracy and today, members of both parties in the House and Senate along with the vice president certified the election of our new president and vice president without controversy or objection,” Pence wrote.

“I welcome the return of order and civility to these historic proceedings and offer my most sincere congratulations and prayers to President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance on their election to lead this great Nation,” he added.

Pence also commended Vice President Kamala Harris for certifying her election loss by presiding over the session, calling it “particularly admirable.”

“I also commend the members of the House, Senate and the Vice President who did their duty under the Constitution of the United States, it being particularly admirable that Vice President Harris would preside over the certification of a presidential election that she lost. God bless our new President and Vice President and their families and may God continue to bless the United States of America,” Pence said.

The lack of objections during Monday’s session made it one of the shortest in the past 16 years, according to CSPAN. The 2025 session was 30 minutes, compared to the quickest during that span, 22 minutes in 2013, and the longest, 14 hours and 48 minutes in 2021.

With the 2024 election results certified, Trump will be sworn in on the West Front of the Capitol in two weeks, while Harris will ponder her political future after Jan. 20.
