Pence Says He Won’t Appeal Ruling Requiring Him To Testify To Jan 6 Grand Jury
Former Vice President, Mike Pence, has announced he will not appeal a federal court order to testify before a grand jury investigating the actions of former President Donald Trump in the weeks leading up to the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. The ruling came after Chief U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg ordered the former Vice President to comply with a grand jury subpoena issued by the investigation’s special counsel Jack Smith.
Pence initially challenged the subpoena, arguing his role as president of the Senate presented issues with his testimony due to the Constitution making his position “a hybrid creature of the executive and legislative branch.” However, the judge’s ruling means that even though the “speech or debate” clause serves as a shield for Pence against having to testify about anything related to his role on January 6, he will still be required to answer questions about any illegal acts by Trump.
A spokesperson for Pence said the former Vice President will comply with the subpoena as required by law. The spokesperson also mentioned that according to the court’s decision, the Speech or Debate Clause extends to the Vice President of the United States.
It is not currently known whether Trump will appeal the ruling, with his team arguing his executive privilege blocks some presidential conversations from disclosure to the public.
