Former Vice President‍ Mike Pence Criticizes President Biden’s Economic Record

On Labor⁤ Day, former Vice President and Republican presidential candidate Mike Pence took aim at President Joe Biden’s economic record, ⁢specifically highlighting the growing federal deficit. In​ a statement,‌ Pence expressed his admiration​ for the hard-working men and women‌ of the nation, describing them as faith-filled, freedom-loving, and idealistic individuals.

“Unfortunately, ‌Joe Biden continues to weaken this country at ‌home and abroad with runaway spending,” Pence⁣ stated.

The Concerning Rise of the Federal Deficit

Pence’s statement referred to a‌ recent Washington Post article that discussed the‍ alarming increase ‍in the U.S. deficit, despite the ongoing growth of the economy. The deficit ​represents the amount by which federal spending exceeds⁣ revenues.

After significant federal spending in response to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021,​ the deficit decreased​ to $1 trillion ⁤in 2022. However, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, it is projected to skyrocket back‌ up to approximately $2 trillion by the end of the fiscal‌ year on ‍September 30. As Congress reconvenes this month, the deficit will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion as leaders ​work to secure ​government funding beyond the September 30 deadline. Pence, drawing on his experience as a former member of Congress, strongly criticized the news of the deficit⁤ nearly doubling in 2023.

“Our economy‍ remains on⁤ a downward spiral with an exploding federal deficit driving inflation and erasing​ wage gains. Americans deserve better than what Washington,⁢ D.C., is offering, and Americans deserve a government as⁢ good as ‍its⁣ people,” Pence emphasized. “That’s why I’m pledging to you that ⁢when I⁤ am elected President, we will unleash the ingenuity ⁤of ‌the American worker and tackle the unsustainable debt and deficit issues facing our⁣ Nation.”

Last month, Pence unveiled his economic policy to combat inflation, which includes measures such as ‍reducing ⁢the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget, implementing an immediate freeze on nondefense⁢ spending, and defunding the IRS. He is scheduled to deliver a speech on the clash between populism and conservatism at the New‍ Hampshire⁣ Institute of Politics at Saint ⁤Anselm College, where he will delve into the dangers of unmoored ⁣populism and the choices Republicans and⁣ the nation ‌must make moving forward.

Pence’s visits to New Hampshire, a crucial state in the ​GOP primary schedule, come after the Iowa ⁤caucuses on January 15.‌ Many of the 2024 Republican candidates are relying on victories in either Iowa or New Hampshire to demonstrate the viability of ⁤their campaigns and establish significant momentum in the race for the ​presidential nomination.

Despite his ambitions, Pence faces a challenging task‍ in unseating his former running mate, President Donald Trump, who currently maintains a 53.6% average in RealClearPolitics polls, ​while​ Pence ‍garners only 4.6% support.

However, Pence did gain significant traction during last week’s Republican presidential primary debate, where ⁣he showcased ⁢a more combative‍ persona ⁣on stage.
