Pence warns of entitlement and debt ‘iceberg’ sinking US in break with Trump
Former Vice President Mike Pence warns about the impending threat of insolvency in Social Security and Medicare. He struck a serious note and criticized politicians who refrain from reforming the entitled programs. He urged Congress to act as soon as possible, arguing that delaying reforms increases the problems instead of decreasing them. Pence believes that compassionate reforms are the solution for this problem, which will help younger Americans secure their future.
Pence argued that the tip of the iceberg is that we often hear that Medicare is just five years away from insolvency, and Social Security will be exhausted within ten years. However, he cautioned that this is a mere glimpse of a debt crisis that will face your generation. As he addressed an event for the Washington and Lee University’s Mock Convention, Pence said that the iceberg could sink American prosperity by the time you reach his age if this generation does not face it today.
He believes that even though it is a tricky political issue, Americans need to cut the programs that seniors depend on when they are needed or double the middle-class taxes, crushing the economy under the taxation system more like the European taxes than their own. He also noted that if the younger generation doesn’t act now, it is your dreams and opportunities that will be at risk.
Pence refrained from providing further details on how he would deal with entitlement reform as he addressed the outlook for future generations.
As Republicans and Democrats enter the 2024 election, entitlement programs have emerged as a crucial flashpoint. President Joe Biden has been attacking the GOP on entitlements, while Pence believes that Biden’s policy is insolvency. Pence has begged his party not to shy away from entitlement reform; however, the Republican leaders have deemed Medicare and Social Security off the table during debt ceiling negotiations.
Pence worries that there are too many GOP leaders who are against entitlement reform, and he believes that it is unacceptable. According to him, Former President Donald Trump has drawn battle lines with his 2024 foes on entitlement reform, thus illustrating a schism within the GOP. Other 2024 aspirants, such as former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who launched her campaign in February, have been more receptive to entitlement reform. However, they emphasize that they will keep their promises to all the seniors, thereby ensuring that the programs remain solvent.
Pence stopped in the key early primary states of New Hampshire and Iowa last week, and he currently runs in third place in a hypothetical GOP primary.
