‘People Just Aren’t Great People’: Sunny Hostin On Why ‘Mask Mandates’ Are Needed

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin says she’s not going to trust others when it comes to COVID-19 and that governments need to enact “mask mandates” because “people just aren’t great people.”

During a panel discussion Tuesday on “The View,” the co-hosts debated whether or not mask mandates are necessary in light of Philadelphia becoming the “first major U.S. city to reinstate mask mandates.”

Sara Haines said, as the virus variants and severity have changed, she has also changed her thoughts on this, and that it’s not time to pull out the masks but instead it’s time to save “the life of our economy.”

“I don’t think right now we need federal and state mandates, with the exception of like travel,” Haines shared.

“But I think right now they are not only not necessary to have those mandates from above or from the government. But I also think they are not prudent because we are going to maybe need to put those masks on again. … If we’re grabbing those right away … it kind of sows mistrust in when we’re going to need them,” she said.

“As it’s [virus] kind of changed and the severity has gone down and the deaths have gone down, now it’s time to save the life of our economy and our businesses,” she added. “There are small businesses that are never going to come back. Dreams crushed … we need to save them now.”

Alyssa Farah Griffin, who worked in former President Donald Trump’s administration, interjected, saying, “two years ago we didn’t let people, Americans, make assessments based on their own health?”

Griffin and Hostin then got in a heated head-to-head over whether it was Trump or then-vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris who politicized the virus. Joy Behar contended that it was Trump and the Republican Party “who poisoned the well from the beginning” so “a lot of people maybe in the millions who refused to have gotten vaccinated. And that’s where this all started.”

Griffin pointed out that there were “things that were said by Democrats early on that politicized the virus.”

“Vice President Kamala Harris in the Vice Presidential debate said if Dr. [Anthony] Fauci says I should get it I will, but I’m not getting a Trump vaccine,” Griffin explained. “That’s dangerous.

Hostin looked shocked and said to Griffin that Harris’ comment was “way after this vaccine was politicized by your boss.”

“We want people to be better than they are,” Hostin shared, going back to the mandate debate. “But we can not necessarily rely on people to protect their fellow man. We know that that just doesn’t happen. But I think when it comes to mask mandates, they’re there because people just aren’t great people.”

“That’s just the bottom line,” she added. “Americans just aren’t great to each other. We just aren’t.”
