Phil Murphy asserts New Jersey unable to accommodate New York immigrants.

Gov. ‌Phil Murphy: New Jersey Cannot Handle Immigration Crisis

Despite his promise to turn New Jersey into a “sanctuary state,” Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) has stated that his state lacks the‍ capacity and resources to assist its northern neighbor with the ongoing ⁢immigration crisis. This comes as the Biden administration considers using Atlantic City International Airport as a potential site to house over 100,000 immigrants who have flooded‌ into New York City since the spring of 2022.

“I don’t see any scenario where we’re going to be able to take in a program in Atlantic City or frankly elsewhere⁣ in the state,” Murphy told New Jersey 12. “You need scale, enormous amount of federal‌ support, resources that go ⁢beyond anything⁤ that we can afford.⁣ Putting everything else aside, I ‍just don’t see⁤ it.⁢ I would suspect that that will continue to be the case.”

Murphy claims⁤ that he has not been contacted by the White House or⁢ federal officials regarding hosting immigrants, but he has already observed⁣ immigrants in his state whom he believes came from New York. He also acknowledges that they could have come from other cities ⁣experiencing a similar influx, such as Chicago or Washington, D.C.

Local‌ officials in Atlantic County, one of the poorest counties in New Jersey despite hosting Atlantic City, also⁤ oppose the idea of receiving immigrants.

“All I can say is that I will do my best to prevent this⁤ from happening,” said‌ longtime Republican Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson. “We⁣ can’t afford it. We’re a poor county. We’re one of the poorest counties in New Jersey. It’s not a burden I can put on our taxpayers.”

Meanwhile, Massachusetts ⁣is also grappling with a significant influx of ‌immigrants, with the⁤ state housing 20,000 individuals in converted⁣ hotels.‌ Both New York and Massachusetts have state laws requiring ⁤them to provide housing for immigrants, but the⁣ current surge has overwhelmed their housing systems.

Gov. Maura Healey (D-MA) has taken action by ‍activating 250 members of the Massachusetts National Guard to help⁤ coordinate the ⁢needs of the immigrants.
