Phillies’ Harper loses it, hurls helmet to stands, grabbed by 10-year-old.
PHILADELPHIA—Bryce Harper went ballistic on the third base umpire and then launched his maroon Phillies helmet over the protective netting and into the stands.
This wasn’t your average souvenir like a foul ball. Hayden Dorfman, a 10-year-old Phillies fan from Voorhees, New Jersey, scored an autographed keepsake that he could proudly wear home.
Dorfman ended up with the lucky helmet after a group of adults wrestled for it in the aisle on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and, thanks to the insistence of the boy’s father, Aaron, the helmet found its way to the ecstatic fifth grader.
The Dorfmans are partial season-ticket holders and attend around six Phillies games each year, sitting just a few rows behind the home dugout in section 117.
The fireworks began when Harper was ejected by third base umpire Ángel Hernández after a checked strike three. Harper appeared to hold his swing on a full count against Pirates starter Luis L. Ortiz and started removing his protective gear when Hernández called him out.
Harper angrily ripped off his batting helmet and confronted Hernández as he walked down the baseline. Harper pointed his finger in Hernández’s face and had to be separated by manager Rob Thomson.
Before heading into the dugout, Harper hurled his helmet into the stands, receiving a thunderous ovation from Phillies fans.
But now, let’s hear it from Hayden.
“So! He threw it over and then there’s like a bunch of dads like diving in for it,” he said. “I knew I wouldn’t get it. But I went in to just see what would happen. It looked like he had a pretty good grip on it, so I kind of went in. Then (my dad) started the chant, ‘Give it to the kid!’ And then that worked.
“And then, like a while later, we went to the bathroom and got a text, come back because Bryce Harper wants to sign it. I ran back and gave the helmet to like five security people.”
The Phillies staff retrieved the helmet from young Dorfman and later returned it to him, now signed by Harper with a No. 3 and Philly Philly! inscription. Harper also added his signature, along with Luke 1:37, a Bible verse that says, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
But on this unforgettable night, the impossible became possible.
“After everything, as I was walking off, I wasn’t too upset anymore,” Harper said after the Phillies’ 3–2 loss. “I kind of let it all out. I just threw my helmet into the stands because I didn’t need it anymore. I signed it for the kid, and he was super happy. It was a good ending.”
Aaron Dorfman revealed that three men “larger than I am” grabbed onto the helmet after Harper tossed it into the stands. So he decided to diffuse the situation by ensuring that a child would have Harper’s helmet.
“Ten seconds later, it was on his head,” Dorfman said.
With the Phillies gearing up to host playoff games next week, Harper jokingly brushed off any concerns about getting a new helmet.
“I can get new ones,” quipped the $330 million slugger.
How did the crowd in Citizens Bank Park react to the umpire’s decision and Bryce Harper’s frustration?
Ndez’s face and shouted at him, clearly upset with the call. The crowd in Citizens Bank Park erupted in boos, supporting their star player and expressing their displeasure with the umpire’s decision. Harper then took his frustration to the next level, launching his helmet into the stands.
As luck would have it, the helmet landed in the hands of young Hayden Dorfman. The 10-year-old couldn’t believe his eyes as he suddenly became the owner of a prized possession. The adults around him also recognized the significance of the moment and engaged in a brief struggle to claim the helmet for themselves. However, it was Hayden’s father, Aaron, who stepped in and ensured that his son would be the one to take the helmet home.
The Dorfman family has been avid Phillies fans for years, attending multiple games each season. They have cultivated a special connection with the team, sitting close to the action in section 117. This incident only added to their collection of unforgettable memories.
While the incident was undeniably dramatic, it also points to a larger issue in baseball – the relationship between players and umpires. The heated exchange between Harper and Hernández highlights the ongoing tension that can arise when calls don’t go a player’s way. However, it is important for players to remember that umpires are human and prone to making mistakes, just like anyone else. Reacting with anger and aggression, as Harper did, only serves to escalate the situation and create a negative atmosphere.
Instead, players should strive to handle disagreements with umpires in a more constructive manner. Respectful dialogue and open communication can go a long way in resolving conflicts and maintaining a positive on-field environment. After all, baseball is a team sport that requires collaboration between players, umpires, and coaches. It is in everyone’s best interest to work together and find common ground.
In the case of Bryce Harper and Angel Hernández, emotions undoubtedly got the better of them. However, it is important not to let this incident overshadow the talent and passion that both individuals bring to the game. Harper is known for his fiery personality and competitive spirit, while Hernández has been a respected umpire in Major League Baseball for many years.
Ultimately, what matters most is how both parties handle the aftermath of this incident. It provides an opportunity for reflection and growth, not only for Harper and Hernández, but for the entire baseball community. By learning from this experience, players and umpires can strive towards a more harmonious relationship built on mutual respect and understanding.
As for Hayden Dorfman, he is the fortunate beneficiary of a unique and unforgettable moment in baseball history. The autographed helmet will surely become a cherished item in his collection, serving as a constant reminder of the day he became a part of the game in a truly unexpected way.
Baseball is a sport that is rich in tradition and history. From legendary players to iconic moments, it has captivated fans for generations. The incident involving Bryce Harper and his helmet only adds to the tapestry of stories and memories that make baseball such a beloved pastime.
While it is important to address the issues that arise from incidents like this, it is equally vital to celebrate the positive aspects of the game. The passion of the players, the excitement of the fans, and the sheer joy of being a part of something greater than oneself – these are the qualities that make baseball a truly special sport.
