Phillips open to No Labels bid if Biden faces Trump again
Rep. Dean Phillips Considers Third-Party Presidential Bid
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), a Democratic presidential candidate, has expressed his willingness to entertain a third-party presidential bid if it seems likely that President Joe Biden would lose a rematch against former President Donald Trump.
Phillips has shown interest in running on No Labels, a centrist group exploring an independent bid. However, Biden’s allies have raised concerns about the potential of such a candidate drawing Democratic or independent voters away from the president.
“It would have to be a Joe Biden-Donald Trump rematch that shows Joe Biden is almost certain to lose,” Phillips told the New York Times. “That is the only condition in which I would even entertain a conversation with any alternative.”
Phillips has a longstanding relationship with Nancy Jacobson, the chief executive of No Labels, from his time in the group’s congressional Problem Solvers Caucus.
“People are criticizing them because they believe whomever they offer on their ticket will hurt Joe Biden,” he said. “That’s false. If they put someone at the top of the ticket who could actually drive votes from Donald Trump, every Democrat in the United States of America should be celebrating it. They haven’t made that determination.”
Phillips has been focusing his campaign efforts in New Hampshire, where Biden will not appear on the ballot due to changes in the primary schedule. Despite the Democratic National Committee’s decision to move South Carolina to the first-in-the-nation position, New Hampshire maintained its primary schedule, prompting Biden’s campaign not to file in the state.
However, there is a group in New Hampshire working on a Biden write-in effort to ensure his victory.
Phillips’ campaign has taken advantage of Biden’s absence in the state and aims to challenge him on Jan. 23. In a recent TV ad, Phillips compared the president’s lack of presence in New Hampshire to ”Bigfoot.”

What factors have contributed to the growing dissatisfaction with the two-party system among American voters?
Ident Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden will be the major party candidates in the 2020 election. This decision by Rep. Phillips reflects a growing dissatisfaction with the two-party system among American voters.
In recent years, there has been a palpable frustration with the political establishment in the United States. Many Americans feel that the two major parties do not truly represent their interests and that the system is in dire need of a shake-up. Rep. Phillips’ potential third-party bid is a direct response to this sentiment.
Although Rep. Phillips is a member of the Democratic Party, he has been an outspoken advocate for bipartisanship and political cooperation throughout his career. His willingness to consider a third-party bid stems from his belief that there is a need for a viable alternative that can bridge the gap between Democrats and Republicans.
The idea of a third-party candidate making a significant impact on the U.S. presidential election is not unprecedented. In 1992, Ross Perot ran as an independent candidate and garnered a substantial amount of the popular vote. His campaign highlighted the desire among voters for a candidate who represented their interests outside of the established party lines.
Rep. Phillips’ decision to potentially run as a third-party candidate is not without its challenges. The two major parties, with their vast resources and established networks, have a significant advantage in terms of campaign infrastructure. Additionally, third-party candidates often face difficulty in gaining significant media attention and being included in debates.
However, Rep. Phillips believes that with the right message and strategy, a third-party candidate can overcome these obstacles. He intends to bring attention to the issues that matter most to the American people: healthcare, the economy, climate change, and criminal justice reform. By focusing on these critical issues, Rep. Phillips hopes to garner support from disenfranchised voters who feel that their concerns are not being adequately addressed by the major party candidates.
One potential benefit of Rep. Phillips’ third-party bid is that it could help to break the partisan gridlock that has plagued American politics in recent years. By presenting himself as a candidate who is willing to reach across party lines and work towards bipartisan solutions, he could inspire a much-needed shift in the political landscape.
It is important to note that Rep. Phillips’ consideration of a third-party bid is still in its early stages, and there are many factors that will ultimately influence his decision. Nevertheless, the fact that a sitting member of Congress is even entertaining the idea speaks volumes about the growing dissatisfaction with the two-party system in the United States.
The 2020 presidential election has the potential to be a turning point in American politics. Rep. Dean Phillips’ potential third-party bid represents a challenge to the established order and a call for change. Whether or not he ultimately decides to run, his willingness to challenge the status quo should not be overlooked. It serves as a reminder that American voters are yearning for a political system that better represents their interests and aspirations.
