A photo capturing the historic events of the shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania showed one of the bullets in the frame, just barely missing Trump’s head.

The photo, taken by New York Times photographer Doug Mills, showed a gray line just above Trump’s left shoulder. Another photo taken by Mills right after showed Trump checking his right ear, and a third one showed blood on his hand after taking it away from his ear.

Trump wrote on Truth Social following the shooting that a bullet had “pierced the upper part of my right ear.” He added that he heard a “whizzing sound,” and that he felt the bullet “ripping through the skin.”

“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump’s statement reads. “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.”

Ivanka Trump, the former president’s daughter, gave her thanks to the Secret Service agents for their quick reaction to the shooting and expressed thanks to those who expressed their concern for her father. She added that she continues “to pray for our country.”

“I love you Dad, today and always,” Ivanka Trump wrote on X.

The Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito, who attended the rally, wrote that Trump had been speaking for about six minutes before the sound of gunshots rang out. The Secret Service then got around Trump to protect him and, shortly after, escorted him to his motorcade for transportation to a hospital.

President Joe Biden condemned political violence as “sick” in the wake of the shooting, stressing the need to unite as a country. The Biden campaign also announced Saturday that it is “pausing all outbound communications and working to pull down our television ads as quickly as possible.”
