A plurality of young voters believe that the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was justified.
An Emerson College poll found that 41% of 18-29-year-old voters believed the killing was somewhat or completely acceptable, compared to 40% who believed it was somewhat or completely unacceptable. Another 19% were neutral.
The response was a major outlier from every other age demographic, with a majority believing the shooting wasn’t justified. Just 10% or less of the 50-59-year-old, 60-69-year-old, and 70+-year-old demographics believed the murder was justified. Roughly 23% of the 30-39-year-old demographic and 13% of the 40-49-year-old demographic believed the killing was justified.
Men were somewhat more likely to find the murder justified, at 19% compared to 14% of women.
The responses were also split along party lines, with a fair amount of Democrats finding the killing acceptable compared to very few Republicans and independents.
“While 68% of voters overall reject the killer’s actions, younger voters and Democrats are more split — 41% of voters aged 18-29 find the killer’s actions acceptable (24% somewhat acceptable and 17% completely acceptable), while 40% find them unacceptable; 22% of Democrats find them acceptable, while 59% find them unacceptable, this compares to 12% of Republicans and 16% of independents who find the actions acceptable, underscoring shifting societal attitudes among the youngest electorate and within party lines,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a statement.
The poll reflects previous surveys on the matter, with the first poll taken by the Center for Strategic Politics after suspect Luigi Mangione’s capture finding similar results.
Surveying 455 adults, with a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points, the poll only divided the age category into under and over 45 years old. Among the under age 45, 31% of respondents had a positive view of Mangione, compared to 41% with a negative view. Among those 45 years and older, just 8% had a positive view, compared to 77% who had a negative view.
The killing of Thompson has been met with an unprecedented reaction, with many, particularly young people online, showing support for the assassin. A deluge of memes posted on social media have mocked Thompson and praised Mangione, with the assassin taking on the visage of a folk hero to many.
A fundraiser for Mangione has raised nearly $140,000 for his legal fund as of Tuesday, with donors sending messages of support. One anonymous donor called him a “MAN OF THE PEOPLE,” calling the McDonald’s worker who allegedly tipped off police a “CLASS TRAITOR.” Another anonymous donor called him a “hero and revolutionary,” sending a $100 donation.
One popular message alongside a $20 donation said Mangione had been “mind controlled” to murder Thompson.
Mangione was arrested at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s after a five-day manhunt. Authorities are looking to extradite him to New York, where the crime was committed and where he is wanted for murder in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree.
