South Korean authorities failed to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol after his personal security forces prevented police from entering his residence.

Federal authorities were forced to abandon their plans to arrest Yoon on Friday after civilian supporters and armed Presidential Security Service personnel outnumbered the forces attempting to enter the Seoul residence.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials reported following the incident that “it was virtually impossible to execute the arrest warrant due to the ongoing standoff.”

The office received a warrant to detain Yoon for questioning in relation to his ill-fated martial law declaration last month that sent national politics into a spiral.

Political rivals hope to see Yoon charged with abuse of power and insurrection.

Approximately 200 members of the Presidential Security Service were responsible for rebuffing the arrest. While both sides were armed, no guns were drawn in the hourslong standoff as police attempted to gain entrance into Yoon’s residence.

Yoon’s lawyers had previously warned the country that any police officers attempting to arrest him would risk being arrested themselves by his security service.

Hundreds of the president’s supporters continue to rally in solidarity outside his residence, carrying signs with the slogan “Stop the Steal.”

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions has launched a simultaneous sit-in near the residence, promising to strike until the president is removed from his residence and arrested.

“The KCTU will not back down until the door to the presidential official residence is opened and Yoon Suk-yeol is arrested,” the union said.

South Korean officials are reportedly requesting the acting president to order presidential security personnel to stand down.
