Two High School Cheerleaders are Killed in an Accident that Left a Police Officer In Charge

After striking a vehicle in a high-speed chase that saw two cheerleaders from high school die, a Louisiana police officer was arrested and charged.

David Cauthron, 42 years old, was arrested on Sunday for negligent homicide. He was accused of the fatalities Maggie Dunn (17), and Caroline Gill (16 (16). Dunn’s brother, Liam Dunn, a freshman at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, was also left in critical condition after the crash.

Tony Clayton, 18th Judicial District Attorney told WBRZ-TV reports that Cauthron was placed on administrative leave by the Addis Police Department. Cauthorn was reported in custody Monday afternoon.

Tyquel Zanders (24), was charged with stealing a family car. According to the Advocate, he entered a house, shoved his dad down and then took the keys of a 2016 Nissan Altima. reported.

Cauthorn followed Zanders. The outlet noted that the Altima was travelling at around 80 miles per hour along Government Street and 110 on Interstate 10. According to reports, the police vehicle struck the vehicle Zanders was in after running through a red stop light.

“For these kids to not to have been able to start the New Year is inexcusable, but we’ll follow the facts first,” Clayton spoke to the outlet. “I just can’t put my arms around why (the officer) was driving at that rate of speed in pursuit of this vehicle. This officer is facing some serious issues.”

“If it involves putting human life in danger, stop the damn pursuit. It’s just not worth the risk,” He added.

After the vehicle had stopped, the car theft suspect was arrested. According to Baton Rouge police, Zanders is facing charges in Baton Rouge for home invasion, theft and aggravated flight. The outlet said that Zanders could also be charged with manslaughter in connection to the deaths the two teens.

“As we mourn the tragic deaths of Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill please keep their families, friends, and the BHS community in your thoughts and prayers,” The cheerleading squad posted. “Their enthusiasm and bright smiles will be missed more than can be imagined.”

Brusly High School Principal Walt Lemoine said that Dunn’s mother and sister work at the school and that Gill’s older sister is a senior.

“We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child as you need,” Lemoine wrote.

Students returned to school on Tuesday after a Monday night vigil and an assembly.
