Investigators believed that the stabbing is connected to an altercation German had with someone on Friday. According to police, the suspect may have been in the neighborhood to plan potential crimes.

Throughout his 40-year-journalism career, German broke major stories about the mafia, political corruption, and city politics while reporting for multiple Las Vegas outlets.

During his time with the Las Vegas Sun, German wrote a book about the 1998 murder of casino boss Ted Binion entitled “Murder In Sin City: The Death of a Las Vegas Casino Boss.”

Early in his career, German was instrumental in covering the ties between the Aladdin Hotel and the Detroit mob. He also broke exclusives about the October 2017 country music festival shooting that left 60 people dead and more than 400 injured, including reports about the failure of officials to maintain safety protocols for casinos and details about the gunman shooting at two jet fuel tanks in the festival area.

German’s co-workers at the Las Vegas Review-Journal were stunned by the news of his death.

“The Review-Journal family is devastated to lose Jeff,” said Executive Editor Glenn Cook. “He was the gold standard of the news business. It’s hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like today without his many years of shining a bright light on dark places.”

The Nevada Attorney General also responded to the incident calling it a “senseless tragedy.”

“For decades, Jeff German spoke truth to power in the Silver State,” the official attorney general account tweeted out. “This is a horrible, senseless tragedy.”
