Baltimore Shooting: 2 Dead, 28 Injured, Police Report

Tragic Shooting in Baltimore Community Leaves Two Dead and 28 Injured

A devastating incident unfolded in the Brooklyn community of Baltimore early Sunday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving 28 others wounded, according to local authorities. The police have launched a search for the suspects involved in this heinous act.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., law enforcement officers swiftly responded to multiple distress calls reporting a shooting in the 800 block of Gretna Court, as stated by the Baltimore Police Department in an official statement. Reports from the area suggest that a vibrant block party was taking place when the tragic incident occurred.

Tragically, an 18-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 20-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital shortly after. The remaining 20 victims, aged between 13 and 32, including 14 minors, were rushed to local medical facilities for treatment.

During a press conference held later in the day, Acting Baltimore City Police Commissioner Richard Worley revealed that all but nine of the injured victims had been discharged from the hospitals. However, a few individuals still remain in critical condition.

Law enforcement officers, with the assistance of federal, state, and local partners, are diligently combing through a “very large crime scene,” as stated by Worley. The police strongly believe that multiple individuals were involved in the shooting and are urging members of the community to come forward with any relevant information or video footage.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott vehemently condemned the incident, describing it as a “reckless, cowardly act of violence” that has forever altered the lives of many. He assured the public that the authorities are fully committed to identifying and holding accountable those responsible for this mass shooting.

Mayor Scott, a Democrat, also emphasized that this incident highlights the deep-rooted issues of violence in Baltimore, Maryland, and the entire country, particularly concerning gun violence and the illegal access to firearms.

In a tweet, the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police expressed concern about the staffing shortage in the Southern District, which includes Brooklyn, where the shooting occurred. They called for a comprehensive plan to address this issue and ensure adequate resources for law enforcement.

When questioned about the lack of police presence at the event, Commissioner Worley clarified that the gathering did not have a permit. He pledged to thoroughly investigate the actions taken by officers upon learning about the large party, stating, “If we made mistakes, we will fix them and move forward to ensure this never happens again.”

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, also a Democrat, released a statement expressing gratitude towards the first responders and expressing his deep concern about the ongoing issue of gun violence.

“The fact that these horrific shootings continue to take place is abominable,” Governor Moore stated. “As a state, we will continue to do everything in our power to prevent senseless acts of violence like the one we witnessed last night.”
