Nebraska man pulled over for carrying a bull riding shotgun in his car, defying the law.
A Bull in a Car: A Traffic Stop Like No Other
In the biggest city of northeast Nebraska, a car driving with an unexpected passenger caught the attention of the police. But this wasn’t just any passenger—it was a bull!
Norfolk Police Capt. Chad Reiman shared the amusing incident that unfolded on Wednesday morning. A 911 call alerted the officers about a modified Ford Crown Victoria sedan with a bull riding shotgun on the main highway entering the city. It didn’t take long for them to track down the peculiar vehicle.
“We didn’t have a full understanding of it until we saw it,” Mr. Reiman said.
The car belonged to Lee Meyer, who has been driving it in parades across the area for years. The vehicle had half of its windshield and roof removed to accommodate the bull, named Howdy Doody. A yellow metal cattle gate served as the passenger side door, allowing the Watusi bull to be tied up. To top it off, a set of longhorns acted as a unique hood ornament.
“It wouldn’t go far without being noticed for sure,” Mr. Reiman chuckled.
A video of the traffic stop, captured by News Channel Nebraska, quickly went viral online. The car had even won the Best Car Entry award in Nebraska’s Big Rodeo Parade, as proudly displayed on a sign from a recent parade in Burwell.
When questioned about his unusual choice of transportation, Mr. Meyer explained that he had previously transported Howdy Doody in a proper trailer for parades. However, on this particular day, he decided to load the bull into his car and drive the 36 miles from his home in Neligh to Norfolk. The reason behind this spontaneous decision remains a mystery.
Mr. Meyer’s wife, Rhonda, spoke to a Norfolk radio station about their unique pet. She revealed that Howdy Doody had been a beloved companion for the past eight or nine years. Videos of Lee Meyer driving the bull around can be found online, showcasing their special bond.
“Lee thinks he’s a movie star,” Rhonda Meyer shared, ”but he’s also a little shy.”
While the traffic stop did reveal some violations related to Mr. Meyer’s car, the officer decided to let him off with a warning. As for Rhonda, she couldn’t help but joke about the expenses involved in their unusual project.
“The amount of money that he’s spent on this whole darn project between the car and the bull, I could’ve had a brand new kitchen,” Rhonda Meyer laughed.
So, the next time you’re on the roads of Norfolk, Nebraska, keep an eye out for Lee Meyer and his four-legged companion, Howdy Doody. It’s a sight you won’t soon forget!
